ANNUAL REPORT
OF THE
SCHOOL COMMITTEE
OF THE
Town of South Scituate,
FOR THE
School Year 1874-5.
Report of the School Committee.
To the Citizens of South Scituate:
In presenting to you our report of the condition of the schools for the past year we shall practice brevity, since we find more in all our schools to approve than to find fault with.
The schools have generally during the year been in good hands, and some of them we think have been more successful than in former years. In some districts irreg- ularity in attendance is a serious evil to the prosperity of the school. Parents think it a little matter that a child is detained at home a few days now and then. They do not realize that just as often as the child is kept from school, just so far will he be behind his class. When he returns to school his class is farther advanced than be- fore, and the recitations that have been lost, or the prin- ciples explained while away, makes his task more diffi- cult than before, as the examples solved in his absence he does not understand. Parents alone can remedy this evil, and it should be their aim that their children should be constant and punctual in their attendance at school.
30
Money is not all that is wanting to raise still higher the condition of our schools. It is in some districts a deeper interest on the part of the parents. They should suppress all censure and careless expressions in relation to the teacher. They should instill into the minds of their children the importance of education. They should not forget that the children and youth will soon be called upon to fill offices of "honor and trust," and if they are properly educated will be useful members of society, an honor to their parents and to themselves.
The committee are gratified to observe an increase in the attendance on the part of the parents upon the ex- aminations of the schools and in occasional visits the past year, as it lends inspiration to the teacher, scholar, ' and to all. The farmer looks well to his hired help, and sees that the work on his farm is well and profitably done. The merchant keeps an eye upon the doings of his clerk, that his profits may not run to waste. If you would take the same pains to ascertain the progress of your children, by visiting the school-room, your labor would doubtless be rewarded by the gratitude of the teacher and an increased interest on the part of your children.
The schools in Nos. 1 and 2 are large, and for the present term assistant teachers are employed. Opinions may differ in regard to the propriety of such a course in the present shape of the school-houses, and we would
1
31
suggest whether it would not be best to attach a class- room to the school-houses in Districts 1 and 2.
By an examination of the registers we find that the number of scholars not absent for the year is 15, last year but o. Not absent for two terms 25, last year only 14 ; and quite a number, whose names do not appear, were only absent on account of sickness. While it can- not be expected that every scholar will attend every day, yet this should be the object aimed at. "Children who are punctual at school will learn to be punctual in every- thing else."
In conclusion we would say, as we love our children, as we desire the public good, let us cherish our "Common Schools" and give to them our earnest and united support.
We present the following detailed report of our schools :
DISTRICT NO. 1.
MISS REBECCA C. BROOKS, T'eacher.
This school has been under the instruction of Miss Brooks for the past two years, and ranks as one of the best in town. The relation between teacher and pupils appears to have been pleasant. Good progress has been made in all branches of study. The examination was a very successful one, and the committee regret that her health would not admit of her re- maining another term.

32
Not Absent for Two Terms :

Percentage of attendance for the year, .86 7-38.
.
DISTRICT NO. 2.
MISS MARIA JACOBS, Teacher.
This school has again completed a successful year's work, and made an excellent appearance examination day. The gov- ernment mild, yet firm, seems to have been easily maintained, and a more quiet and pleasant school is seldom seen, and the scholars are to be commended for good order and progress in their studies.
Not Absent for the Year :
E. Everett Jacobs.
Not Absent for Two Terms :

DISTRICT NO. 3.
MISS MARY SCOLLARD and DEBORAH N. HATCH, Teachers.
The winter term was taught by Miss Scollard with fair suc- cess ; but at the close of the term the order was not as good as the committee desired, and Miss Hatch was engaged for the summer and fall terms; and the committee at their different visitations to the school saw marked improvement, and we re- gret that a misunderstanding prevailed in regard to the day fixed for the closing examination.
Not Absent for Two Terms :
Nellie A. Simmons; Emma G. Litchfield, Lillian Prouty and Arthur L. Litchfield.
5
34
Not Absent One Term:

DISTRICT NO. 4.
MISS EMILY S. BROWN, Teacher.
This school has been under the charge of Miss Brown for the full year. At the commencement the school was quite disor- derly, but improvement soon manifested itself, and the progress of the school has been satisfactory. Yet there is not that de- gree of promptness which is desirable, and we think if parents would visit the school-room more frequently the scholars would have more confidence at examinations.
Not Absent for the Year :
Hannah Merritt, Mary L. Brown and Edwin A. Brown.
Not Absent for Two Terms :
Josie Hayden and Irene Hayden.

Percentage of attendance for the year, .78 43-54.
DISTRICT NO. 5.
MISS MARTHA W. BROOKS, Teacher.
This is one of our largest, as well as one of our best schools in town. It has been under the charge of Miss Brooks for the past year, with the exception of a part of the fall term. In this school (and the same should have been said of Nos. 1 and 2,) the scholars are remarkable for promptness in their recitations. Good progress has been made in all the branches taught, the management of the school has been satisfactory, and we com- mend those scholars who exhibited their compositions exam- ination day.
Not Absent for the Year :
Nellie H. Fogg, Mary L. Nash, Lizzie W. Corthell, Grace F. Hatch and Albert L. Sparrell.
36
Not Absent for Two Terms :

Summer Term-Number of scholars 42; average attendance, 37 ; percentage, .88.
Fall Term-Number of scholars, 40 ; average attendance, 37 ; percentage, .92.
Percentage of attendance for the year, .87 19-63.
DISTRICT NO. 6.
MISS MARY L. LINCOLN AND MARY L. ELLS, Teachers.
The winter term was taught by Miss Lincoln with good suc- cess. Great improvenent was made in reading. She was suc- ceeded by Miss Ells. By comparing the school at the close of the fall term with the commencement of the summer term de- cided improvements were apparent.
Not Absent for the Year :
Lizzie M. Turner.
37
Not Absent for Two Terms :
Hannah Jacobs, Willie Monahon, John Monahon and J. Frank Turner.
Not Absent for One Term :
Annie Turner, Willie Turner, Walter Jacobs and John F. · Hatch.

Summer Term-Number of scholars, 20; average attendance, 18 ; percentage, .92.
Fall Term-Number of scholars, 24; average attendance, 21 ; percentage, .87.
Percentage of attendance for the year, .85 65-71.
DISTRICT NO. 7.
LILLIA M. MEANS, MARIANNA HOLBROOK AND EMELINE BRIGGS, Teachers.
This school has suffered for the past two years by change of teachers. Mrs. Means was employed to teach the winter term, but having the offer of another situation gave up the school be- fore its close. The summer term was taught by Miss Holbrook, who seemed to lack that degree of energy which is desirable in a teacher to have a successful school. The fall term was under the charge of Miss Briggs, and at the close of the term the good discipline of the school was particularly noticable and indicated its good condition.
38
Not Absent for Two Terms :
Chauncy D. Ford and Arthur Turner.
Not Absent for One Term :
Angelia B Ford, Elvena Currell, Genevieve Knapp, Lucy B. Clark, Hattie S. Tolman, Hattie E. Winslow, Maria W. Tolman, Herbert C. Tolman, James T. Tolman, Edwin W. Litchfield, Alfred Tolman and Henry Gardner.
Winter Term-Number of scholars, 50; average attendance, 41; percentage, .82.
Summer Term-Number of scholars, 48; average attendance, 36; percentage, .75.
Fall Term-Number of scholars, 45; average attendance, 39; percentage, .86.
Percentage of attendance for the year, .81 17-143.
Respectfully submitted,
C. A. LITCHFIELD, LUCY TURNER, School EMILY T. JACOBS, Committee.
