Depth of snow, Winter of 1874-5, 97.22 inches.

The mean annual depth of rain and melted snow that has fallen in Spring- field for twenty-seven years past, ending December 31, 1874, is 45 1-3 inches.

Springfield 1875-76.

THE publishers of the Springfield City Directory for 1875-76, add materially to its heretofore generous pages and greatly enlarge its field of operations by sup- plementing the City Directory proper, as heretofore pub- lished, with carefully prepared directories of its flourishing suburbs . and neighbors, New West Springfield, Chicopee and Chicopee Falls ; also business directories of these sev- eral places, and much other matter of general interest and usefulness to the business community and citizens as well, such as the location of streets, blocks, business centers, churches, school-houses, public officers, public and private organizations, etc, etc.

New and carefully revised maps-one of the city proper, with all changes and improvements up to the day of publi- cation ; one of New West Springfield and Mittineaque, one of Chicopee and one of Chicopee Falls, have been prepared expressly for the work, and have respectively appropriate places in the present issue.

Contrary to general expectation and expression, we count more names in the City Directory proper than we did last year, the figures standing this year 10,958 against 10,752 last year. This is certainly a gratifying exhibit of our city's growth and prosperity in the face of a long and serious period of business depression and stagnation.

We are gratified in being able to state that building is

SPRINGFIELD CITY DIRECTORY.

livelier and more promising for the season this year than last. Some of the finest and most expensive business blocks ever erected are now being started, and will ap- proach completion before the close of the year. Hand- some residences are also springing up in various parts of the city, and the returns of the year will doubtless record the growth and progress of our building interests as in excess of the year previous.

It is safe to add here that in all the material elements of business life and growth, Springfield holds her own right valiantly and, as ever heretofore, stands ready to "increase and multiply" as long as there is any increas- ing and multiplying to be done.
