SPRINGFIELD CITY DIRECTORY.
Springfield's Growth.
[From the Springfield Daily Union of June 12, 1875.]
WHAT IS ACCOMPLISHED AND WHAT IS PROJECTED .- A BRILLIANT RECORD FOR A "DULL YEAR."-MANY SUBSTANTIAL BLOCKS AND DWELLINGS GOING UP .- A MILLION DOLLARS TO BE EXPENDED .- THE YEAR SURE TO COMPARE FAVOR- ABLY WITH ANY PRECEDING ONE.
THE building prospects in the city for the present year are much more flattering than many people suppose, and a large number of really fine structures are already in process of construction, or about to be commenced. Wages are low, building material is fully as cheap as it has been for a number of years, and an unusual inducement is thus offered for erecting new dwellings and business blocks. Most of the buildings com- menced, early last season, have been completed and are now occupied. The new South Congregational Church, at the corner of Maple and High streets, and Grace Methodist Church, at the corner of Main and Winthrop streets, have been formally dedicated and are used for regular services. All the business blocks begun last year, are also finished and in use. The residences of Mr. A. S. Bryant on Maple street, and Dr. T. F. Breck on Mattoon street, at the corner of Chestnut, are also occupied, and Mr. Marvin Cha- pin's elegant dwelling on Mattoon street is receiving its finishing touches. The new Episcopal Church, which was commenced last year, on Chestnut street, and on which work was suspended during the Winter, is progressing as rapidly as the heavy nature of the work will admit, and will soon be ready for the roof.
Prominent among the buildings to be built this year, is the iron front structure already begun at the corner of Main and Hillman streets, and which will be built jointly by the Third National Bank and J. C. Parsons and Aaron Bagg. The work of exca- vating for the foundation was completed some time ago, but a stratum of treacherous blue clay being struck, it was found necessary to drive several hundred piles, each about 25 feet long, into the bed of the cellar before beginning to lay the heavy granite foundation stone. The block will be five stories high, the line of the balustraded cor- nice being relieved by a handsome pediment, the tympanum of which will be orna- mented with rich scrolling. The whole iron front, which is from designs by J. B. & J. M. Cornell of New York, is highly ornamental. The building will have a front of 100 feet on Main street, with three stories and the banking rooms, the entrance to the latter being the northerly door on the Main street side. Each story will be ornamented with perpendicular quoin lines, and an eagle will be placed over the main story of that por- tion of the building owned by the bank and another on the front of Parsons & Bagg's portion of the block. A profusion of light columns and capitals will aid in decorating the front, and the whole design differs materially from that of any other block in the city. The block will have a depth of 97 feet, and the three stories will be 20 by 85 feet each, the banking rooms having a space of 20 by 94 feet. There will be nine rooms on the second floor, each 24 by 14 feet, two of which will be used by the Young Men's Christian Association, who will also occupy a hall, 47 feet square, on the third
floor. On this same floor will be five other good sized rooms, and twice that number on the fourth floor. The fifth and last story will be left unfinished, for the present at least. The plans, with the exception of those for the iron front, which by the way, will "return " on the pressed brick wall on the Hillman street side, are by G. E. Potter of this city, and the estimated cost of the structure is $70,000. The Cornells furnish the iron work, and Royal Harrington has contracted to do the brick and stone work. At this writing the wood work has not been contracted for.
Perhaps the next building in importance to be erected is the new Five Cents Savings Bank, which is to go up at the corner of Main and East Court streets, on the site of the old Hampden hall, recently torn down to make room for it. The building will be four stories high, of Philadelphia pressed brick, with granite trimming, fronting 55 feet on Main street, and running back 118 feet to Market street. In the center of the Main street side will be an archway, 11 feet wide, leading to the second floor, and on either side of it on the first floor is to be a bank, the Five Cents Savings occupying the south, and probably the Pynchon National the north side. Two stores also on the first floor open on Court street, each with a front of 19 feet. The second story will be devoted to one large store, and will be lighted by a large sky light. The two upper floors will be used for offices, and a water-power elevator will have a place on the Market street side. The plans for the block are by G. E. Potter, and it will cost about $50,000. It is probable that the work will be done by the day, Royal Harrington superintending the brick, and Charles R. Ferry the wood work.
