a minister, that may promote conversion work among us."


Jan. 8, 1646 .- "It is agreed by this Plantation with John Mathews to beate the drum for the meetings for a years space at 10 of the clock, on the lecture days, and at 9 of the clock on the Lord's days, in the forenoon only, and he is to beate it from Mr. Moxons to R. Stebbins house, and ye meetings to begin within a half an houre after, for which his paynes, he is to have 4d in wampum, of every family in towne, or a peck of Indian corne if they have not wampum.


POPULATION OF SPRINGFIELD.


In 1636 eight persons signed the articles of agree- ment for the settlement of the Plantation. There are, however, reasons for believing that the original num- ber of settlers exclusive of women and children was twelve.


In 1639, 13 persons were assessed.


In 1641, the number had increased to 17.


In 1643, there were 22.


In 1646, 42 persons were assessed.


In 1656, there were 52 who had taken the oath of fidelity.
