The association holds its regular meet- ings, which are open and free to the public, on alternate Wednesday evenings, at In- stitute hall, corner of Main and State streets. Meetings are suspended during July and August. The exercises at the regular meetings consist of papers and dis- cussions upon scientific subjects.


During the Summer and Fall, excursions are made to localities of special scientific interest. The society has also secured each year one or two courses of popular scien- tific or historical lectures, from men eminent in their several departments.


Library and Museum of Natural History.


Located in new Library Building on State street, above Chestnut, and open daily. The number of volumes, May 1, 1874, was 35,140, exclusive of unbound pamphlets ; 1,695 volumes have been added the past year. The Directors intend to purchase all the new works of popular in- terest as they appear, and are also continu- ally adding to the Library standard works of permanent value in the various depart- ments of literature, science and art. scribers paying one dollar are entitled to the use of the Library, for one year, and can draw one volume at once, and exchange twice a week at the Library hours.


The Library is open on Monday from 12 o'clock to 9 P. M., and on every other week day, except the legal holidays, from 10 A. M., until 9 P. M.


The new catalogue is furnished to subscri- bers for use in the Library, and is also for sale to those who wish to purchase.


Catalogue slips will be printed each month, containing a list of the new books purchased during the previous month.

The new Library building ranks among our finest public edifices, and cost, with the land, about $100,000. It was designed by George Hathorne of New York, and built of brick, with facings of granite and Ohio stone; it stands 60 feet from the street, and is 100 feet long and 65 wide. The Museum occu- pies the first floor, and above is the Library proper.


MUSEUM-Curators, C. A. Emery, C. W. Bennett, Geo. Dimock, J. A. Allen, and Solomon Stebbins. The Museum is now rearranged in the new Library building, and is open to the public on Wednesday after- noons from 3 to 5. This institution origi- nated in 1860 with the Library Association, and occupied two rooms in the City Hall. It has about 1,500 species, and upwards of 3,800 specimens of shells, classified by Dr. Geo. A. Otis, formerly surgeon of the 27th Massachusetts Regiment ; also 9,000 speci- mens of insects ; 900 specimens of stuffed birds ; 120 stuffed quadrupeds, including two enormous wildcats, killed in this county ; 115 species of fish and reptiles ; small cabi- nets of coral and crustacea ; an extensive mineralogical cabinet ; a large and very cu- rious collection of fossils ; numerous Indian and foreign antiquities, and several flags and


various other trophies captured from the Southern rebels by our home troops. Ad- ditions are frequently made by the gener- osity of our citizens. Donations for the Library or Museum may be left with the Librarian, Rev. William Rice.

THE HAMPDEN CONFERENCE AND BE- NEVOLENT ASSOCIATION- Was organized in 1831, and represents the 38 Congrega- tional churches of the County, in annual convention. Besides their own support nearly thirty of the churches, at the last meeting, reported benevolent contributions for the past year, amounting to $31,545.21.


The annual meeting this year, is with the Park Street Church in West Springfield, the last Tuesday in October.


UNION MUTUAL BENEFICIAL SOCIETY (Colored)-Organized in 1866. Each mem- ber receives $3.00 per week in sickness, to- gether with attendance, and in case of deathı $30 is paid for funeral expenses. Street Railway.


The corporation was organized in 1869, with $100,000 capital stock, of which, only $50,000 has been issued. Directors-G. M. Atwater, Homer Foot, C. L. Covell, H. W. Fare, 8 cents; sixteen tickets for $1, for adults ; children's fare 5 cents ; twenty-four tickets for $1. The route of the railway is from Hooker street through Chicopee and Main to State street, and thence up State street to Winchester Park ; also from State street through Main to Locust street.
