CITY OF BEVERLY 1918
BUSINESS DIRECTORY
Beverly, clean, healthful and beautifully located on the North Shore, with seven miles of the most charming views to be found on this continent, recommends itself to all classes of manufacturers and business men on account of its first-class rail and water facilities and equitable freight rates to all shipping points. Its most significant growth proves it to be the coming city of this part of the Massachusetts coast. With a value- ation of $45,000,000.00, it stands third in Essex County, exceeded only by Lynn and Lawrence. Within its limits are scores of millionaires' and multi-millionaires' palaces. The manufacturing industries comprising shoes, machinery, oil, oiled clothing, foundries, bottle caps, mattresses, planing mills, wood and paper boxes, grain elevators, electric works, etc., and employ a thrifty and well-paid, intelligent people who are contributing to the growth of the city. The shoe industry, established more than a century ago, alone pays one million dollars per year in wages.
The United Shoe Machinery Company, occupying the largest reinforced concrete factory plant in the world and employing 5,000 mechanics, pays a wage of over one and one-half millions per year. The Gulf Refining Company has its New England terminal here and docks its fine steamships running from Port Arthur, Texas. Spur tracks of the Boston & Maine Railroad connect with all the wharves. Population of Beverly, 1918, estimated about 25,000. Eighteen miles from Boston on the Boston & Maine Railroad. Center of Electric Railway system, connecting with every important city and town in Eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Superior harbor. Four banks. Daily and weekly newspapers. Excellent fire department. Good sewers. Well- lighted streets. First-class public schools. Public schools playgrounds costing over $40,000. Modern Bath House at Oceanside Park.
