A Silver Anniversary
CHARLES A. KING
This year marks the 67th anniversary of the publication of The Beverly Citizen and the silver anniversary of the present ownership.
The Citizen was first printed March 17, 1851, by Andrew Wales, a merchant at the N. E. corner of Cabot and Washington streets, who also ran an express line to Boston.
He sold The Citizen to Samuel P. Brown, who printed the paper in the Odd Fellows building, Railroad avenue. It is now printed in the Odd Fellows building on Cabot street and Broadway. In February, 1859, he sold the paper to John B. Cressy and B. Arrington, and Mr. Cressy was connected with the paper for 23 years, selling out to I. W. Allen, who sold it in January, 1892, to Charles A. King, the present owner.
Mr. King's first newspaper venture was the Vermont Gazette, at Bennington. He was associate editor of the New York Sunday Era and was one of the owners of the Milford Gazette. He was business manager of the Woonsocket (R. I.) Evening Call, publisher of the Merrimac Budget and editor of the Berkshire Courier. For the past 18 years he has been editor of the American Benefit Journal as well as The Citizen.
The Citizen office has a fine job printing plant and rubber stamp manufactory.
