Located as we are in the extreme northeast section of the country with not an overabundance of raw materials, Boston and New England lean heavily upon their efficient railroad, seaport and highway service for the continuous import of raw materials and the export of finished products to keep the supply lines of this important area open for world commerce.

BOSTON ... Convention City

Two hundred thousand conventioneers spending up- wards of 25 million dollars annually comprises one of the more important segments of the income of Greater Boston. The agency which is responsible for convention solicitation as well as an extensive tourist promotion program for Bos- ton is the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Advance convention bookings for 1957 and 1958 indicate that Boston will play host to 350 different conventions in each of those years. At an average expenditure of $125* per delegate, the convention business will be in excess of 25 million dollars in those years.

Boston-city of yesterday and tomorrow has been the theme of the Convention and Visitors Bureau's visitor pro- motion program which has been centered around the out- standing motion picture film of the same name. During the first full year of use, this outstanding promotional media was seen by a nationwide audience of four million people.

The publication and distribution of literature to con- vention delegates and in answer to mail requests is another important phase of the Bureau operation. More than 500 mail requests alone are received at the Bureau office weekly. Visitors to Boston place high value on such helpful material as guide maps, hotel guides, restaurant guides and shoppers guides. The Convention and Visitors Bureau distributes better than a quarter million pieces of literature each year to convention delegates and tourists.

Highly competitive bidding among forty of the country's major convention cities necessitates a strong and progressive Convention Bureau in order that Boston may secure its share of the convention business. Boston today ranks as one of the top ten convention cities in America. An aggres- sive program of convention solicitation and tourist promo- tion is the function of the Convention and Visitors Bureau in order to hold and improve this position.

As plans develop and a convention and exhibition hall becomes a reality in Boston entire new fields of convention possibilities will be opened. As more conventions and con-

ventioneers converge on our city there will be demands for more hotel rooms, larger restaurants and additional transportation facilities. These front line businessmen will, in turn, hire additional help and buy new equipment to. accommodate the increased demand, and the dollars received through their cash registers will reach the pockets of all people who work in the Greater Boston area.

In addition to the actual solicitation of conventions, one of the greatest aids to a large national convention is the Housing Service provided by the Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau. Many of the national organizations that meet in our city request assistance in arranging room res- ervations for their delegates. This task would be one of momentous proportions for a stranger to Boston or a person not familiar with our hotels and all their facilities. Past experience and complete familiarity with the hotels of the city enable this Bureau to handle the largest convention housing assignment with efficiency and speed. Through such services provided by the Bureau, the visitor to the "Hub" is made happy with that all-important first impres- sion, and chances are that he will return again with addi- tional tourist dollars to spend.

Boston is a city rich in attractions for the visitor; as the home of the Red Sox, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Art Festival and innumerable historical shrines, we in Boston are in an enviable position to lure more and more visitors each year. An intelligent and aggressive program of convention solicitation and tourist promotion is the only way Poston will attract its share of this multi-billion dol- lar market.

A highly effective promotion program is presently carrying Boston's story to new and expanded markets throughout the United States by the Convention and Visitors Bureau.

* According to latest national surveys on convention dele- gate spending.
