INTRODUCTORY.
IT is with no ordinary pleasure that we issue this edition of the CAMBRIDGE CITY DIRECTORY for 1891. No. 40 in the regular series. We have honestly endeavored to produce such a book as shall meet the reasonable demands and expectations of those for whom it is intended. It would be presumption on our part to assert that it is free from errors and imperfections; we can only affirm that we have faithfully tried to reduce such defects to the minimum. We shall be grateful for any suggestions, from what- ever source, that will help to make our Annual Directory more use- ful to our patrons.
We take this opportunity to tender our personal congratulations to the people of the no mean city on the Charles at the invaluable improvements in its public edifices recently effected through the munificence of Mr. Rindge. Not many cities can boast of such buildings as the new City Hall, the Public Library, the High School, approaching completion, and the Manual Training School. Especially gratifying must be the avoidance to the city of the dreaded burden of the support of the last named institution, by the recent offer of its generous-hearted fouuder to take npon him- self its financial management for the present. With such bene- factions and the opening of the Harvard bridge, too long delayed- why should Cambridge people not be happy?
In conclusion we express our thanks to all who have aided us in the compilation of the present edition.
