Instructions to Key Holders.
Alarms to be given from the box nearest the location of the fire.
Do not give an alarmı for a fire seen at a distance, unless assistance is called for.
To give an alarm, open the door, pull the hook to the bottom of the slot once, and let go. Each box contains a small bell, which, if heard before you pull, indicates that an alarm has been previously given, and by listening at the box, you will learn the number of the box, from which the alarm was given, but in no case will you pull the box while the alarm is striking. After giving the alarm, remain at the box, so as to direct the firemen to the fire. Be sure that you lock the box before leaving it.
Citizens are requested to inform themselves where keys to the signal boxes are kept, signs suitably inscrib- ed being placed over each box, giv- ing the requisite information.
621
MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT
Instructions to Firemen.
First alarm will be given by strik- ing three or more rounds.
Second alarm will be given by repeating the first.
General alarm will be given by striking three blows on the gongs and bells.
In cases where hook and ladder companies only are wanted, the call will be given by striking five blows.
Companies not required to re- spond to first or second alarms will be notified of the extinguishment of a fire by two blows on the gongs. that their services will not be need- ed. and that orders have been given to "make up." Should an alarm be given from any box while a por- tion of the department is engaged at a fire, the apparatus not in ser- vice will respond.
