By the fostering care of the Government during its early years, and by the munificence of individuals, in later years, the " public School at Newtown," has now become the well known University at Cambridge,-the most extensive and best endowed Seminary of Learning in the United States. It now consists of five Depart- ments,-the College; the Law, the Divinity, the Medical, and the Scientific Schools; and the number of officers of instruction and government in all the departments, is forty-one.
Some of the peculiar advantages of this institution are, the finest public and miscellaneous Library in the United States, consisting of more than 53000 volumes; the best Law Library in America, if not in the world, containing over 12000 volumes: the best refracting telescope in the world; and funds for the assistance of meritorious indigent students, to the amount of more than $1400, annually, and this sum constantly increasing.
