RATES OF POSTAGE,
Compiled from the Post Ofice Laws and Regulations.
FOR Letters not exceeding 1-2 ounce in weight, for any dis- tance within the United States not more than 3,000 miles, 3 cents prepaid, and 5 cents when not prepaid. And for any distance exceeding 3,000 miles, double these rates.
If conveyed wholly or in part by sea, and to or from a foreign country, for any distance over 2,500 miles, 20 cents, and for any distance under 2,500 miles, 10 cents (unless other- wise fixed by treaty.) And every additional half ounce or additional weight of less than half an ounce, shall be charged with an additional postage. Letters to California and Oregon, 6 cents prepaid, 10 cents when not prepaid.
All drop-letters or letters placed in any post office not for transmission but for delivery only. shall be charged one cent each. All letters advertised as uncalled for, shall be charged one cent additional to the regular postage.
Letter Postage between the United States and Canada and other British North American Provinces.
Letters weighing not more than 1-2 an ounce to and from British North American Provinces, for any distance not over 3,000 miles, 10 cents ; for any distance over 3,000 miles, 15 cents, and for every additional half ounce an additional post- age is charged.
Postage on Books, Periodicals, Newspapers, Circulars and other Printed Matter.
Each newspaper, periodical, unsealed circular, and other printed matter, not exceeding three ounces in weight, shall be sent to any part of the United States for 1 cent. And for every additional ounce or fraction of an ounce 1 cent additional shall be charged.
When the postage of any newspaper or periodical is paid yearly or quarterly in advance, at the office where the same is mailed, and evidence of such payment is furnished to the office of delivery - one-half of said rates only shall be charged.
