Cambridge Fire Department.
The Fire Department of Cambridge is composed of a Chief Engineer, four Assistants, six Engine Companies, and one Hook and Ladder Company. There is, in addition to these, in the first Ward, a company who confine their labors to that Ward-the Engine being owned by private citizens in that Ward.
The regular companies consist, in all, of thirty-five able- bodied men: viz. a Foreman, first Assistant Foreman, second Assistant Foreman, Clerk, Steward, and thirty men, of not less than twenty-one years of age, subject to the approval of the Mayor and Aldermen. The Hook and Ladder Company consists of twenty able-bodied men, in- cluding the officers.
The pay and allowance to each Engine Company is $955. To the Hook and Ladder Company, $545. No allowance is made for refreshments except in cases of assistance ren- dered by fire companies from adjoining cities or towns, and then not to exceed six dollars for each company refreshed, and then only by order of the Chief Engineer or his As- sistants.
