Established in 1853.

His Honor, the Mayor, ex officio, Chairman. Z. L. Raymond, Zelotes Hosmer, Anson Hooker, Abraham Edwards, T. B. Bigelow, Wm. A. Saunders, Commissioners.

Henry H. Eames, Superintendent.

The city authorities of Cambridge, in 1853, purchased twenty-four acres of land in the vicinity of Mount Au- burn, and bordering on Charles River, to be devoted to the purposes of a Cemetery for the citizens of Cam- bridge. It is a lovely spot, and well suited to the pur- pose for which it was purchased. Avenues have been made in various directions through the greater portion of the grounds. The lots contain three hundred square feet, and are sold at ten cents per foot, equal to $30 per lot. Two hundred and twenty-six lots have already

45

CEMETERIES.

been sold. A large section has been laid out for a pub- lic burying ground, for those who are unable to purchase lots ; one hundred and forty-five have been interred in this part of the Cemetery.

The Cemetery contains about 125 acres. There are already more than 2,500 lots. The recent clearing of trees has opened some new and beautiful locations. The old house formerly occupied by the Superintendent, and all out buildings, have been recently removed, and all that delightful portion of the grounds will probably be devoted to the wants of the public.

The Superintendent may always be found at the Cemetery, except on Saturday mornings, when he is in attendance at the Secretary's Office.

Tickets of admission for carriages may be obtained of the Secretary, at 39 Court street, Boston.
