MUSEUM OF COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY.
octagon in form, having one side extended for bowling-alleys. The diameter on the ground is eighty feet. Ample provision is made for light and ventilation by windows in the clere-story. The whole terminates in a pointed dome at the top. The prin- cipal material is brick. Inside, the main body of the building is in one apartment, with dressing-rooms for the several classes, offices, &c., ranged around it. Gas, aqueduct water, and artifi- cial heat are provided. The apparatus is probably the most thorough, complete and secure of any in the country. It was made under the direction of Mr. Waitt, the able mechanic of the College, advised by the Superintendent. The architect of the structure itself was Mr. Edward Cabot, of Boston. It stands on a smaller Delta, between Broadway and Cambridge Street, directly opposite the College Yard.
Mr. Molineux, the Superintendent and instructor, from Wor- cester, is an experienced, athletic, gentlemanly, careful officer. All persons directly connected with the University, as officers or students, are admitted to the exercises. Classes are arranged for regular instruction. Nearly four hundred undergraduates attend, and more than a hundred and fifty from the Professional Schools.
MUSEUM OF COMPARATIVE ZOOLOGY.
The munificent sum of fifty thousand dollars having been given by William Gray to found a Museum of Comparative Zoology, the Legislature of this Commonwealth, at the session of 1859, passed an Act incorporating certain persons, under the name of the "Trustees of the Museum of Comparative Zo- ology," with power to hold real and personal property to the amount of three hundred thousand dollars, and authorized the issue of State Scrip in aid of said Museum to the amount of one hundred thousand dollars, whenever an equal sum, including that given by Mr. Gray, should have been raised by private subscription. To meet this liability of the Commonwealth, twenty per cent. of the proceeds of the sales of the Back Bay lands were to be held in the Treasury as a Trust Fund.
In less than a year a private subscription of seventy thousand dollars has been raised in addition to the sum given by Mr. Gray, and a building has been erected on land given by Harvard College, in which an immense number of specimens has been already stored.
To the interest awakened by the genius and enthusiasm of Professor Agassiz is the Commonwealth indebted for the honor of being the first to institute and endow this noble aid in the study of Natural History.
