One stroke of the bell is given as a fire signal, one minute before the box number is struck.
Two strokes of the bell are given for a recall when fire is out.

WATER SUPPLY DIVISION : - Water Commissioner. - George. W. Batchelder. Salary, $2,100. Chosen annually in January, by City Council in concurrence.
Dates of Construction, 1845, 1864, 1883, 1893, 1895, 1896, 1900, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1904, 1906.
Dams and reservoirs at Lynde Brook, 55/8 miles from City Hall, built 1864, have an area of 143 acres. Area of water shed, 1,870 acres. The depth of water at dam is 37.4 feet-the capacity of reservoir is 681,000,000 gallons-elevation above City Hall, 481.25 feet.
Parsons' reservoir, used for distribution, has a capacity of 9,000,000 gallons.
Kettle Brook supply has four reservoirs and a water shed of 2,314 acres. Capacity of first res- ervoir, 15,000,000 gallons; second, 127,000,000: third, 152,000,000; fourth, 514,000,000. The supply is drawn into Lynde Brook reservoir through a 30-inch conduit.
Dams and reservoirs at Tatnuck Brook, about 5 miles from City Hall, built in 1883, raised 10 feet in 1892, depth of water at dam is 30 feet, its capacity is about 730,000,000 gallons, having an area of 94.52 acres. Area of water shed is about 3,148 acres. Elevation above City Hall is 260 feet.
Distribution reservoir on Tatnuck Brook, below the larger reservoir, holds about 2,500,000 gallons. Holden reservoir, No. 2, was constructed 1900, 1901. Capacity, 260,000,000 gallons.
Total capacity of the nine reservoirs is 2,550,000,000 gallons.
Number of fire hydrants set in the city, 2,012; number of gates, 2,868; number of service pipes, 15,061; number of meters, 14,466. Number of miles of main pipe, 197.22; miles of service pipe, in street, 61.27; miles of service pipe, on premises of individuals, 76.713.
Total cost of water works to December 1, 1906, including new supply from Kettle Brook, and raising dam, $4,406,201.86. Income from water rates for fiscal year ending December 1, 1906, $328,358.28.

The Overseers of the Poor have charge of the Home Farm, and supervision of resident and non-resident paupers of the city.

A Scavenger Department-under charge of the Superintendent. Sixteen double wagons, owned by this department, are constantly employed in the city collecting offal, 30 tons being collected daily, carrying this from the city to the Home Farm, where it is fed to swine.

There are 513 Welsbach gas lights supplied and maintained by The Welsbach Street Lighting Co. at a cost of $29.00 per light per annum. They burn all night and every night.
There are also 1,281 gasoline Welsbachs lighted and cared for by the department, at a cost of $22.73 per lamp, per year. They burn in two classes; 496 every night and all night; the remain- der on moon schedule, 252 nights per year.
