Under Chapter 19, Revised Laws, and the civil service rules, appointments to the following positions in the service of Worcester can be made only in accordance with said Act and rules.
Clerks, copyists, recorders, book-keepers, agents and persons performing any clerical, record- ing or similar service under whatever designation, turnkeys, watchmen, drivers of prison wagons, policemen, draw-tenders and assistant draw-tenders, foremen and sub-foremen of laborers, inspect- ors of work, and all persons doing inspection service, janitors and engineers in charge of public buildings, superintendents other than chief superintendents, civil engineers, architects and elec- tricians.
Persons desiring to apply for appointment to either of said positions, can obtain blank appli- cations from Frank B. Hall, Secretary of the Board of Examiners.
When an examination is to be held, the Secretary of the Board of Examiners will notify all applicants of record, or such number of them as can be conveniently examined, to appear for examination.
If an appointing officer desires to fill a vacancy in any position within the classified civil service, he must make requisition upon the Board of Examiners, upon a blank prescribed by the Commis- sioners, when they will certify the three most eligible persons on the proper register. By Chapter 19, Revised Laws, the names of honorably discharged veterans of the War of the Rebellion shall be certified in preference to all others, and veterans so certified shall be appointed in preference to those not veterans.
Every original appointment is for the probationary period of six months.

The Supreme Court of the United States consists of one Chief, and eight Associate Justices. There are nine judicial circuits, and to each of these is assigned one of the justices. Also two Circuit Judges have been appointed for the first and fourth circuits, and three for each of the other circuits.

A session without juries is held at Worcester on the second Monday of each month except July, August and September.
