Smith Post, G. A. R., of Athol, and was a familiar figure at many of the Grand Army gatherings and regiment reunions in this part of the state. He was a prominent member and ac- tive worker in the Baptist church at West Royalston, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school for twenty years, and treasurer of the church about the same length of time. He was also interested in town affairs. and was a member of the school committee for several years. He died Sept. 12, 1914. See portrait Page 96.
DAVID P. FOSTER
David P. Foster, who was a well-known citizen of Royal- ston for nearly three-quarters of a century, was born in Temple, N. H., Sept. 4, 1815, a son of Joshua Foster, Jr., and Lucy (Tenny) Foster. His grandfather, Joshua Foster, is supposed to be the first Foster that landed in America. His father and grandfather both took part in the capture of Ticon- deroga, his father being only sixteen years old at the time. He came to Royalston when a young man, in 1834, and this town was his home during the remainder of his long life. He was for a number of years employed in the cabinet and furni- ture shops of the Holman's at Royalston centre, and later bought a farm which he carried on for many years. Soon after coming to Royalston he became a member of the First Congregational church and was through his life a prominent member of the same. On Aug. 31, 1842, he married Nancy P. Tenney, daughter of Solomon and Lydia Tenney. She died Jan. 25, 1846, of consumption, and March 25, 1847, he married Rebeccah M. Walker, daughter of John and Mercy Walker. He married, third, Mary (Morse) Bartlett in 1859, by whom he had two children, Mary Emma, born in 1865, who died in 1880, and Dellie Peabody, born in 1868, who married Frank B. Doane and resides in Athol. David P. Foster died April 5, 1903, at the age of 87 years and 7 months, and Mary Bartlett Foster died May 17, 1907.
MYRON WALKER SHERWOOD
Myron Walker Sherwood, prominent farmer and town officer, was born in Barrington, N. Y., son of Mr. and Mrs.

Loring Sherwood. His early childhood was spent in his native town. Later the family moved to New Jersey, where they lived for six years, and then moved to Massachusetts, coming to Royalston in 1881. He held the office of Selectman in 1897 and 1898, was secretary of the School Committee thir- teen years, from 1898 to 1911, and has also been road sur- veyor and Forest Fire Warden. He was married Sept. 24, 1907, to Miss Louise Pratt of Reading, Mass., who had been a successful teacher in the schools of Royalston for five years. They have one son, Warren W. Sherwood, born March 19, 1913.
MILLARD W. WHITE
John White, the immigrant ancestor of Millard W. White, came from the West of England and settled in Salem, Mass., in 1638. Michael V. White of the eighth generation, father of Millard W., was born in Athol or Winchendon about 1820. Millard W. White was born in Winchendon Oct. 18, 1859, was educated in the district schools. Engaged in farming and lumbering and when a young man went into business on his own account. He had a saw mill in Winchendon where he manufactured and sold lumber. In 1881 he went to Royalston where he purchased a saw mill which he continued to run for 27 years. He was prominent in town affairs, having been chairman of the board of Selectmen 13 years, overseer of the poor one year and Cemetery Commissioner fourteen years. He was employed by the Connecticut River Transmission Co. for two years, settling the land damages on the transmission line. In 1911 he moved to Winchendon and was employed as general superintendent for E. Murdock & Co. for some time when he started in the lumber business again for himself, and is engaged in that business at the present time. He is a mem- ber of the Masonic organizations, the Red Men, Patrons of Husbandry and the Congregational church. In 1885 he mar- ried Jane L. Goodnow of Oakham, daughter of William and Sarah Goodnow.
