Une mary are covered the ground now covered by the Es- change Building, Water Street, which was the site of the old Bartlett homestead, and till 1855 was in the possession of, and beenpied by, heirs of Bailey Bartlett, a lineal descendant of Jolm Johnson.
On this spot, also, John Johnson and his third wife were killed by the h thans, when they attacked Haverhill in 1708
Our family will be represented at the anniversary celebration by our revered aunt. Mrs. Abby Bartlett Kimbih, tenth and only sur- vi ang child of Bailey Bartlett and Peggy White. My aunt, Mrs. Charles L. Bartlett, mother of Gen. William Francis Bartlett, will also be present.
I shall anxiously await a report of the occasion so fraught with interest to all associated with the history of Haverhill.

APPENDIX.
The occasion must be one of great intere a to all connected with Haverhill, either as their birthplace, of the birthplace of their ances- tors, or as former residents, as well as to her present inhabitants ; and it will also be of great interest to a host of citizensof the County of Essex, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts (of whom I am cer- tainly one ) who have had, and now have, the pleasantest relations with her people, and who have always found them warm-hearted, generous, and true.
The people of Haverhill and her multitudes of friends have the strongest reasons for pride in her past record and in her present position. In her settlement, as in that of most Massachusetts towns, - . was blessed with men of marked ability, courage, fortitude, and light character Heroically will they and their descendants, for her Restobe Lan lied and fifty years, accept ant meet the hardships and petits incident upon her settlement and deione . and the founding and maintaining those institutions which have been the pride and glory of the nation, and nobly did ber citizen, join hands with the pratiriots of all parts of the good old Commonwealth, and give their Hiv cani formes in visgje ding the right and. . people to civil and religious freedom , and premiing them for themselves and their posterity
In the labors and sacrifices of those early days haverhill took a most honorable part, and for the past hundred years she has shown in st worthy of her heritage. She has fully sustained her reputa- lion. The past half century has been one of most signal success. Although she has had, in common with other enies and towns, her pressions and reverses, her population has increased six-fold, and in all the elements of material prosperity the increase has been more than ten-fold, and she will enter upon ha coming half century with every advantage for continued and increased prosperity in all depart- ments necessary for the development of her people in religion, morals, and education, and individual enjoyment and municipal importance.
The liberality of her citizens has pad ded ist the care of the unfortunate, as well as for the intellectual culture of her people Her business men are broad-minded and progressive, well equipped to meet the new and increased demands of Business in all its various lines. Hler citizens are most intelligent, enterprising, and thnifty, but also patriotic and public spirito.l.
Long may these noble conditions loi prosperity continue, and The fondest wishes of her sons and daughters and devoted friends be Inlly realized !

OAK KNOLL, DANVERS, Jane 28, 1890. HON. THOMAS E. BURNHAM, Mayor of Haverhill.
No one can more deeply regret than myself my mability to be Recent at the celebration of the two hundred and fiftieth anniver- sary of my native town. In my present condition of health my strength is scarcely able to bear even the pleasurable excitement !! such an decision.
Some of the best years of my life were spent in the old farm hich my first American ancestor cleared and planted ; and which I chetantly left under the pressure of fivenuisances From the & sinh of parting with it, I think I have never fully recovered. I primul to it in dreams, the imagery of which is fashioned from the na dlertions of boyhood.
Through nearly three generations I have wat hed with interest the growth and fortunes of my birthplace; and, that this interest in un unabated, there needs no other proof than the fact that I Io. ale wed myself to be persuaded, at an age twelve years beyond the Psalmist's allotment. to take, by proxy. some part in the exercises of the coming celebration
I am truly thy friend,
