In submitting our report for the year ending December 31, 1914, we would say that by the recommendation of the finance committee accepted by the town, we have set fifty- five years as age when members shall be retired. We recom . mend the purchase of a motor driven combination, as a matter of economy as well as efficiency and progress; also the pur- chase of a tractor for the ladder truck, which. with so many hills in our town, often proves very unsatisfactory when horse drawn, as at present.
We also recommend that a special appropriation for the fighting of brush fires be made, to be spent by the board of selectmen, as is required by law. This is a matter which has been handled by the fire engineers out of their incidentals, and, as a result, has oftentimes handicapped them in provid- ing proper and necessary supplies for this department.
We recommend the following appropriations :-
l'ay of members
. $9,400 00
Incidentals
·
2,200 00
Repars -
. . · 800 00
New hose
. .
500 00
$12,900 00
129
In conclusion we desire to thank the members of the fire department for their prompt response to duty, and for the hearty co-operation and interest which they have shown in their work.
Respectfully submitted, E. M. CROCKETT, JOHN HOLMES, EDWARD J. BURKE, Engineers of Fire Department.

Once again your attention is called to the advisability of increasing the yearly appropriation for the maintenance of the system. The cost of keeping the filter beds in good condition is necessarily greater than in some other places, because of the fineness of the sand and the constant necessity of regrad. ing. We would recommend an appropriation not less than $4,000 for the following year.
The most important matter demanding consideration in the line of further construction is the necessity of laying an additional siphon in Depot street. By reference to page 20 of the original report of the engineer, it will be seen that, in or- der to obtain a self-cleansing velocity during the early years of the system, the capacity of the siphon originally laid was intentionally made materially less than that of the main sewer, and it was estimated that another pipe would have to be laid about 1920. Owing, however, to the leakage into the sewers, it has become necessary to lay an additional pipe im- mediately, in order that the flow during the spring months may be carried off without backflooding of the main sewer and overflowing from the manholes into the street.
The engineer has estimated this siphon to cost $8,200, and allowing for contingencies, it is recommended that authority be obtained from the legislature to issue additional bonds to the extent of $10,000 for the purpose of laying a 16-inch cast iron siphon in Depot street.
