More than eight hundred children in Massachusetts die each year from diphtheria alone. The State Board of Health seem to be of the opinion that something more ought to be done more than we are doing to save some of these lives. They think that if every child in the country was immunized to diphtheria the disease might be stamped out entirely. In 1922 between 3000 and 4000 children in Northampton and about 150 children in Williamsburg were given the toxin- antitoxin to make them immune to diphtheria. No one of these children, who took the full treatment, has since had the disease. It would be a fine thing if every child were so treated.

Appropriation, 1922, $2,000.00 Appropriation, 1923, 500.00

When this work was well underway, to the Board of Selectmen it seemed very desirable to close the West end of Myrtl Ave. and extend Fairfield Ave. over to Main. Later this was done by the County Commissioners, who bought the Warner place on Main Street and exchanged part of this land for land laying between the Warner prop- erty and Myrtle Ave., giving a roadway 31 feet on Myrtle and 41 on Main Street. The sewer which was laid on Main cost $600.00. The County of Hampshire paid $300.00. The abutters, Thomas Lenihan, Mert O'Brien, Mrs. Catherine Brazel, Marian Michelouski, Stanilson Rozmarynelski, John Sodlowada, each paid $37.50 for the privilege of connecting their cellar drains. There still remains unpaid $75.00. There are two homes that could and ought to connect with this sewer, as no surface drainage should be allowed to run into the street.
