Report of Cemetery Committee.
The Cemetery Committee herewith submit their Annual Report, together with the receipts and expenditures for the year ending February 2, 1885.
During the year the face-wall on the west side of the Cemetery has been extended twelve rods, and the avenues between the lots as laid out on the plan enlargement have been graded. General needed work about the Cemetery has also been done as the means at hand would allow.
It is very desirable that the face-wall should be extended on the southwestern side of the premises about twenty-five rods, ample material being furnished within the Cemetery limits. It is also necessary to grade the avenues with hard gravel, suitable for the purpose. We therefore respectfully ask an appropriation of $300, together with the avails of lots sold during the ensuing year.

Thirteenth Annual Report
OF THE
Trustees of Memorial Hall.
Nothing of special interest in the history of the Library has occurred during the past year. With the exception of the frescoing of the Reading-room, which has much improved its appearance, and the construction of two new show-cases in the upper hall, no changes have been made.
We would call the special attention of all who are in- terested in preserving the history of the Town to the existence of these show-cases. They are for the preservation and ex- hibition of objects of various kinds which are in any way illustrative of the past of Andover. They will contain, in fact, the nucleus of a museum, small indeed, but not on that account, to be despised. We, of this generation, are still comparatively near the beginnings of the history of the Town, and objects which would be valuable, if brought together, are continually passing out of existence as rubbish, or into oblivion. It is therefore important that there should be a place where these may be collected, and where all the story they have to tell may be carefully preserved. Many speci- mens of Indian weapons and utensils have been found on Andover soil ; and there is no way in which a collection of such articles could more certainly be made useful to the community, and tributary to the grateful remembrance of the donor, than by placing them in a museum of this kind. There are probably many papers in private families which
67
would be valuable as illustrations of by-gone customs, were they where they could be seen. There are also relics of the wars through which our nation has passed, which are of the greatest interest to those who are growing up to inherit our traditions, and which will increase in value as time goes on. It is also desirable that we should have as large a collection as possible of the animals and birds of this region ; and all rare specimens will be welcomed and preserved, together with the names of the donors. The larger such a collection becomes the more interest there will be in adding to it. But the greatest honor is due to those who help it in the day of small things.
The annual examination of the Library shows it to be in good condition.
Respectfully submitted,
