ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE, BERKLEY
To the Citizens of Berkley :
Miss Dorothea McAloon of Taunton, a graduate of State Teachers' College at Hyannis, was elected in August, 1938 to the vacancy at the Myricks School caused by the resignation of Miss Muriel Barnes, who went to a teaching position at North Dighton. This was the only change in the teaching staff during the year.
The committee senses a feeling of satisfaction in the work of the Berkley Schools, and it is sure that the townspeople would be equally pleased if they would observe at first hand the schools at work. We have a competent staff of teachers whose work is not confined to the classroom. Their interest is evidenced in the work of the 4-H Clubs, the boys and girl scouts' programs, and in athletics, all of which goes far in promoting the well rounded education of the boys and girls.
In requesting the sum of $21,653.93 to cover school costs during the ensuing year, the committee would call attention to the reimbursement by the state which amounts to approximately $14,303.93, leaving a net cost to the town of $7,350.00.
The committee meets regularly on the Wednes- day preceding the first Saturday of every month, and it welcomes at any time a friendly discussion with interested individuals in regard to problems affecting the schools.
Respectfully submitted, MILDRED A. CARR BABBITT
Secretary, School Committee.

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
To the Berkley School Committee :
Mrs. Babbitt and Gentlemen:
I am submitting herewith my ninth annual re- port as superintendent of schools in the Town of Berkley. The changes in these nine years have been many. Only one teacher who was in the Berkley Schools when I came to this district is still teaching in Berkley. Improved building conditions are an outstanding achievement. Nine years ago the Berk- ley School building had an unfinished basement and no modern sanitary facilities. Today it is a com- pletely modern building - well equipped. The teachers of the town are a group of professionally- minded well-trained people who are sincerely inter- ested in the welfare of the boys and girls.
To you-members of the committee-to whom is due the credit for so many of the steps ahead and for the ever-ready counsel and support of the pro- gram-I would express my sincere appreciation and my determination that, in spite of unavoidable finan- cial handicaps, the Berkley Schools shall rank high in their achievement for the children for whose in- terest they exist.
The Budget.
The 1939 budget shows a total increase of $409.93. It should be noted that the only item show- ing a major increase in the budget is that of high school tuition which is a fixed responsibility. This increase of $645.00 in tuition is due to the fact that while Berkley has 11 seniors in high school due to graduate, it also has an entering class for September 1939 of 28 pupils which make a net increase of 17 in high school enrolment.
5

That this increase is due in part to industrial conditions is true. It should be also attributed to the increasing desire on the part of parents to give to boys and girls a better opportunity to prepare them- selves to earn a livelihood.
The increase in high school tuition has been partially offset by reductions in the items listed be- low :
(a) teachers salaries
(b) transportation
(c) repairs
Of most interest to the townspeople, however, should be the amount chargeable to local taxation which is the net cost after state reimbursements are deducted. This is shown in the table below:

The School and the Public.
Essential in any school system, if it is to do its best for the pupils in the school, is the intelligent co-

operation of the public. No one can know the school without entering its doors. Hearsay knowledge is not enough. For that reason I am urging once more that the citizens of the town acquaint them- selves with the school program from inside its doors. One of the fundamental principles of the public edu- cation is that "the public school is the school of the people". It must, by its very nature, reflect the de- sires of the citizens. If we remember also that edu- cation is not completed in the school and that the school is only one agency in the education of young people-the home, the church, the movie, the news- paper, the corner gang-each are influences in the whole educative process. This close relation of the varying forces which affect the future of young people is my reason for asking teachers to contact the homes of the pupils in their charge, to know as much as possible about community life and to them- selves participate in it. It is also my reason for hop- ing that parents will use any opportunity to talk over problems concerning boys and girls with the teachers or principal.
The annual observance of Education Week brought out a fine number of interested parents who saw the children at their actual school tasks.
Respectfully submitted, NORMAN D. BAILEY,
Superintendent of Schools.

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN AND NURSE
To the Superintendent of Schools:
Dear Sir :
We hereby submit our annual report.
The use of the Telebinocular, an eye testing machine used in conjunction with the Snellen Chart, was of great value in checking the sight of the pupils.
The annual physical examination of 206 pupils showed an increase in pupils needing attention for enlarged tonsils and adenoids. In so many of the cases the family is financially unable to take care of the necessary operations and the same is true where glasses are needed. The number of slight lateral curvature of the spine showed an alarming increase. Through the establishing of Physical Education classes it is hoped that this defect may be corrected.
At your request a Parent Conference was held in Myricks and Berkley Schools. The parents at- tending expressed their appreciation of the help re- ceived at the meetings. Dr. Briggs gave a demon- stration of a physical examination, explaining as he worked and led a discussion of the various clinics open to the pupils of the school.
There were no epidemics of contagious diseases through the year. Occasional cases of mumps and measles and chicken-pox being reported.
If interest is shown a Dental Clinic may be es- tablished during the coming year.

ANNUAL REPORT
REPORT OF MUSIC SUPERVISOR
To the Superintendent of Schools:
Dear Sir:
I herewith submit my report on the work in music in the public schools of Berkley for the year 1938.
Grades I and II learned fifty rote songs. These included art songs, observation songs, and songs for special holidays.
Every effort is always made to develop the sing- ing voice of the monotone. He is placed in front of a good singer so he may hear the correct tune. He is encouraged to match tones and phrases as the teacher and supervisor give him special help.
Simple notation is presented toward the end of the year as a preparatory step for book work. Pu- pils in all of the grades are encouraged to sing alone or in groups before their classmates. Beginning with Grade III and on through Grade VI inclusive, much stress is placed on tone quality, syllable read- ing, and time problems.
In Myricks the music classes have made marked progress and greater leadership is in evidence. This is very encouraging.
At the graduation in June the program was built around the music of the British Isles. Myricks presented Welsh and Scotch songs and Berkley Com- mon gave those of Ireland and England and boys' chorus "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" was especially well received by the audience as was "O No, John," by the Myricks School with pantomine dramatiza- tion.

ANNUAL REPORT
In September a new arrangement of music classes was made at Berkley Common because of the division of several of the grades. The music classes now are Grades I and II, III, IV, V and VI, VII and VIII. This is working out very satisfactorily and better work is being done.
About twenty pupils, under the direction of Mr. Thomas, sang two selections at the Sunday morning services in the Berkley Church the last of November. Such participation gives confidence and poise to these young people.
In closing I should like to express my very sin- cere appreciation of the fine cooperation given me by the teachers.
Respectfully submitted, LOIS J. SNOW,
Supervisor of Music.
