Except for the Sabin Oral vaccine clinics, the school health program has been carried out as usual with the splendid cooperation of the school doctors, Dr. Charles Souza and currently, Dr. Alan Poole.

In connection with the immunization clinics we have had during the past twenty years, I would like to mention Dr. Charles M. Souza. He has always been most considerate to the pupils, trying to ease the ordeal of a polio or diph- theria shot. The children knew he was their friend and he would "do it quick" while I held them tight.

ANNUAL REPORT

It was a disappointment when the dental appropriation was cut from $300 to $100, to be used for examination only at the last town meeting. The Dental Clinic has had a diffi- cult record. It was started and maintained by the Berkley Women's Club in 1945. Transportation was furnished by club members and pupils were taken to Dr. Roy Latimer's office. Dr. Latimer was our school dentist for three years. During this period we tried to get the townspeople to ap- propriate money for maintaining the dental clinic, and after three years, $300 was voted for the clinic and the Women's Club was relieved of the burden, but continued to transport the children. In 1949, Dr. Israel Helfand took over the clinic and has served us faithfully, often upsetting his own schedule to take an emergency case, a child with a toothache, often ulcerated. Dr. Helfand and I feel the clinic was a success and served a necessary need. A great deal of work was accomplished and dental care was ren- dered to those who may never have had an opportunity of visiting a dentist.

Entering the new school in September of 1962 was a thrill - we had looked forward to a new school and a health room for so long - it just didn't seem possible our dream had come true. It will be very pleasant working in such lovely surroundings and Mrs. Cabral has my best wishes for a successful school health program.

In closing, I would like to express my sincere thanks to all those who have given of their time at clinics or helped in many other ways. Mrs. Esther Bowden, R. N., Dighton School Nurse for assistance at clinics; Mrs. Elwell Perry for help at the Sabin Oral Clinics; Mrs. Francis Kenney for a very efficient job of keeping clinic records; Berkley Gen- eral Store for storing vaccines in their freezer until needed; Mr. Rolfe, former superintendent and Mr. Roy; Mr. Flem- ing and all the teachers for sending out notices and checking on returned slips; Taunton Board of Health for loaning sterilized equipment, especially Miss Margaret Sheehy; Berkley Women's Club and Berkley PTA for their whole- hearted support and generosity over the years; Mrs. Roger Macker, a very helpful neighbor at the "old school"; Taun- ton Lions Club for glasses for those who needed assistance and to all townspeople for the many kind and thoughtful messages I received at the time of my retirement.

The dinner given me by the teachers was certainly a lov-

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

Mr. Robert T. Roy Superintendent of Schools Dighton, Massachusetts

Dear Mr. Roy:

I herewith submit my report as nurse in the Berkley School System.

The routine health program in both schools has been carried out. All pupils have been weighed and measured. The state vision test has been given to all students and the pure tone hearing tests are still in progress. Dr. Alan Poole has done physical exams in grades one, two, three, and five. Parents of the first and third grade students were invited to attend. The general health of the students is good.

The pre-school clinic, Diphtheria and Tetanus, and the Polio clinics are being planned for the spring. The Dental Clinic services have been limited to inspection of teeth. No students have used these services this past year.

In December Dr. Alan Poole administered the flu vaccine to the faculty and custodians of both the elementary and junior high schools. These were given at cost to the teachers.

Respectfully submitted, Amelia M. Cabral, R. N. School Nurse

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL DOCTOR

Mr. Robert T. Roy Superintendent of Schools North Dighton, Massachusetts

Dear Sir:

Physical examinations of the students in Junior High School were completed with the assistance of Mrs. Dilling- ham, a dedicated school nurse who will be missed upon retirement.

We are currently examining pupils in the new Elementary School with the assistance of Mrs. Cabral, a commendable choice of school nurse by your Committee.

Both the health and hygiene of the pupils continue to show worthwhile improvement, and healthwise, this should be a good year for the Berkley schools.

Very truly yours, DR. ALAN M. POOLE

REPORT OF THE BERKLEY SCHOOL PLANNING AND BUILDING COMMITTEE

The Berkley Elementary School was completed by Sep- tember 1, 1962 to the extent that classes could be held in the building without interruption. The grading outside the building had not been completed. Many items inside the building were incomplete. The stand-by generator was not installed and the cafeteria equipment had not been ap- proved.

During the early fall meetings the committee approved the purchase of a generator, provided funds for grading the playground and purchased equipment such as maps, globes, flags, health equipment, and maitenance equipment.

The Committee voted to equip the kitchen for the cafe- teria. An article was presented at a Special Town Meeting on September 24, 1962 asking that money be transferred and appropriated to equip the kitchen. The article received a favorable vote. The architect was instructed to proceed with equipping the kitchen. It was necessary for him to contact the original bidders to see if all figures submitted a year previous would hold. This involved installers as well as fabricators. By December the work of making all ar- rangements had been completed and the complete installa- tion will be finished in March.

The grading of the playground will be completed in the spring. We are indebted to Mr. Alfred Gouvia for donating enough loam to cover the playground.

The contractor who did the landscaping around the build- ing will also return in the spring to complete his work.

On November 11, 1962 a formal dedication of the Build- ing was held. Music was supplied by the Apponequet Re- gional School Band. Senator John Parker represented the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and Mr. Frank Hill spoke for the Massachusetts Department of Education. Reverend Arthur Kennan and Monsignor Francis Mckeon represented the clergy. The building was accepted by Mrs. Estelle Stet- son, Chairman of the School Committee and Mr. Eino Silvan, Chairman of the Board of Selectmen accepted the building for the Town.

The Reverend Richard H. Sullivan, C.S.C. President of Stonehill College was the dedication speaker.

107

ANNUAL REPORT

The chairman of the dedication program was Principal J. Gerald Fleming.

The Committee expect to close the account with the School Building Assistance Commission as soon as the items listed previously have been completed.

Respectfully submitted,

ROBERT T. ROY Superintendent of Schools
