The expenditures enumerated above show the small margin left for the incidental supplies and repairs of scoolhouses.

The improvement of the drainage and sanitaries in the base- ment of the Monatiquot schoolhouse was ordered by the state inspector of buildings so late in the summer vacation that the work was commenced in the greatest possible haste so as to have the building ready for use in September. The work was performed under the supervision of Mr. E. H. Weatherbee, engineer, directed by Joseph A. Moore, state inspector.

The cesspool was rebuilt and made deeper, all drainage pipes and vault floors were relaid, the closet vaults were rebottomed, new closet pans were supplied, earth was taken out and clean earth put in its place, and a new basement floor laid.

The increase in the number of pupils in the Monatiquot School from 375 to 435 made it necessary to provide extra room The equipment of the third floor of the Monatiquot Schoolhouse for the use of the High School seemed to be the most satisfac-

143

tory and economical temporary arrangement that could be devised. This plan permitted a sufficient number of pupils to be taken from the Union School to make the grading and classi- fication in that school more satisfactory.

The hot water heating system in the Monatiquot School house had never done the work intended. The increase in the number of pupils and the extension of school work made it necessary to use the rooms to be warmed by the hot water sys- tem.

The heating plant was not designed to warm the rooms on the third floor of this schoolhouse for regular use. It seemed more economical to put on extra storm windows and a storm porch instead of increasing the heating plant.

The expense for additional desks and seats represents the demand for the increase of pupils, about 150.

It will readily be seen that an annual increase of nearly 100 pupils who must be supplied with a new set of books, etc., makes it very difficult to keep the expenditure for text books and supplies within what seems to be a reasonable limit, and yet our present expenditure is below the average for the state.
