We have had very few changes or additions in our list of text books, but are just introducing a new series in Reading that will be of distinct benefit. We need to substitute the new series of Aldine readers for the old edition, and we need supplementary books in History and Geography. As soon as possible there should be a new edition of Geography texts and a revision of the course of study in History as well as in Geography. More at- tention should be given to Drawing and Handwork in the grades. We have a teacher who is ready to supervise this work if time can be found. A good text for teaching Civics should be procured for the grades, as special emphasis is now being placed on training for citizenship. In the high school we have a modern book for this work.
Something should be done this year about repairs and new desks at the North Rutland school. This village is too remote from the Center to make transportation of any of the pupils advisable, but we need to improve conditions there. We have
69
been very fortunate in securing excellent teachers for the school, through the co-operation of the Lowell State Normal School, and a special appropriation of $1,000 is needed to make necessary changes and additions to equipment.
Special thanks are due to Mr. Griffin at West Rutland for the practical demonstration of his public spirit and for his splendid service to the town. He has furnished the material and labor for painting the entire interior and exterior of the building, and has provided for its care and cleaning.
Provision should be made for transporting the seventh and eighth grades from West Rutland to the Center and also for high school pupils. In this connection it is well to note that under Part II of Chapter 363, Acts of 1919, we are reimbursed for one half of all we spend for transportation.
In closing I want to urge that parents take a greater interest in our schools, that they try to get better acquainted with the teachers, and that there be recognition of the importance of the public schools in the life of the community. We need co-opera- tion and the cultivation in the home of an atmosphere favorable to the schools. Criticisms should be made to school officials and not before children. The School Committee, the Superintendent, and the teachers are eager for the success of the school system and the individual child. The spirit of our teachers is excellent. They merit our moral and financial support.
Respectfully submitted,
J. R. CHILDS,
Superintendent of Schools.

REPORT OF THE HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
Rutland, Mass., January 1, 1920.
To the Superintendent of Schools:
In compliance with your request I am submitting my report of the Rutland High School.
We were very fortunate in securing the services of Mrs. Vera A. Drury as the assistant teacher, and it has been a real pleasure to work with her.
The enrollment this year shows an increase of eight over that of last year. Next year it should be still larger, for we lose none by graduation, there being no senior class now.
To meet this increase in membership I wish to urge the need of another assistant, under whose direction courses in Manual Arts and Music may be introduced.
There is special need for increased laboratory equipment and for new text books in Science and English.
I wish to thank the School Committee and the Superintendent for their very loyal support. It is my earnest desire to merit it.
Respectfully submitted,
CHANNING H. GREENE,
Principal.

REPORT OF SCHOOL PHYSICIAN
Rutland, Mass., December 31, 1920.
The school children have been as a rule quite well. The usual colds and acute troubles of the upper air passages kept some at home for a time. No serious communicable disease has appeared in the schools. The village school had quite a number of cases of so-called war itch, which with proper treat- ment subsided in a few days. Whooping cough disturbed the school very little, as that occurred during vacation time. German measles appeared in West Rutland School. Pink eye (acu t conjunctivitis) occurred in North Rutland School. Decayed teeth, tonsil and adenoids are the worst troubles among the children. These should have, as has been advised, proper treatment. Many children from the Center school are sent to the physician's office for examination or some injury, while in school. We wish Rutland could see its necessity to supply ample means for a system which will provide for a school nurse and a thorough physical examination of each of the school pupils.
We need the co-operation of parents and inhabitants to get more benefits from school examinations. If you would not have affliction visit you twice, listen at once to what it teaches.
Respectfully submitted,
WILLIAM E. CHAMBERLAIN, School Physician.
