REPORT OF THE FIRE ENGINEERS
Your fire engineers met and organized as follows: C. T. Oliver, Chief Engineer, and E. D. Marsh, Assistant Chief and Clerk.
We have had few calls during the past year, only one of which caused serious damage, that being the Vocational School on Maple Avenue. On account of the roads being blocked with snow we were unable to get the truck to the scene of the fire, and the building was a total loss together with the contents. We have distributed six more fire extinguishers and taken in one during the past year, making sixty-five which have been dis- tributed throughout the outlying districts. The expenses of the department for the year have been as follows:
W. E. Hunt, janitor
$18 00
C. T. Oliver, janitor

C. T. Oliver, testing and filling extin- guishers

REPORT OF THE FOREST WARDEN
At the last Annual Town Meeting, an appropriation of $150 was made for fires and forest fires.
From this amount there was drawn for the expense of ex- tinguishing forest fires, the sum of $30.90.
During the season of 1923 there has been issued 119 permits for building fires in the open.
Four alarms were answered, two of which were calls from Mt. Wachusett.
There were two alarms answered for chimney fires.
The department also responded to calls from Holden, Prince- ton, and Hubbardston, which the Town of Rutland has been fully reimbursed for.
With but one or two exceptions the Forest Warden feels that the law relating to setting fires in the open between the first of March till the first of December is respected by all.
Respectfully yours,
CLARENCE T. OLIVER, Forest Warden.

REMARKS
Work in this town has been very satisfactory. Many of the roads need to be widened, and with the brush removed this year, this work can be done to a better advantage the coming season. A great many corrugated iron culverts are still needed, as the drainage on many of the roads is bad.
On Maple Avenue, the improved part should be resurfaced, but before this is done, it would be well to see if aid cannot be obtained under Chapter 90 work, to help on this road. At present new additions are being made to the Veteran's Hospital, and heavy trucks carrying supplies and materials use this road. The road will get a great deal of this heavy traffic even after building operations stop, as the Hospital has trucks that are used for supplies and hauling coal. Unless some aid is received, a great part of the appropriation must be spent maintaining this road, Pomagussett Road, and Miles Street. This matter the Selectmen should take up directly with the Department in Boston, also with the County Commission, for extra money to do a good, thorough job in resurfacing.
This year under Chapter 90, a section on Maple Avenue about 500 feet long was built, beginning at the end of the im- proved work, and extending southerly. Stone fill the entire length, about 12 inches deep and 18 ft. wide, was laid, and same covered with gravel. This work is not completed, but is sus- pended for the winter.
On Irish Lane, 730 feet of roadway was constructed under the same Act, with stone fill 9 feet wide, and 10 inches deep through- out, and covered with gravel 4 inches deep, 15 feet wide. This work was let out by contract, and the Lane Construction Com- pany did the work for the lump sum of $1,000.00.

REPORT OF THE WATER COMMISSIONERS
In accordance with a vote taken at the last annual meeting your water commissioners have taken out the old steam pumping plant and installed an auxiliary electric pump of 375 gallons per minute capacity. We have also installed an oil engine to be attached to the old electric pump in case for any reason the electric power gives out. You will see from the financial report of the superintendent that the cost of making this change over- ran our estimate less than $200. We have renewed several service pipes during the past year on account of them filling up with rust. There is more of this work to be done during the next year. We feel that in the near future the town should extend a 4-inch main from Pound Hill down Main Street to a point near the Central Elm House as the water takers on Central Free Road are taking water now from the State Sanatorium mains, which is unsatisfactory both to the Sanatorium officials and the town.
GEORGE H. MILES, E. DEXTER MARSH, WILLIAM E. HUNT, Water Commissioners.
