I. REPORT OF INSTRUCTOR IN MUSIC.

TO MR. I. M. NORCROSS, Superintendent of Schools:

In presenting my report for the past year, I can say very little, except that the study of music in the schools is progressing in a most satisfactory manner.

The fact that nearly two thousand pupils in the public schools of this town are being taught to sing by the best methods, presents a pleasing outlook to all music- loving people. I think very few people really understand that the pupils are learning to sing by note, or, as I sometimes hear it quaintly expressed, "learn- ing to sing by rule.'

I have often been surprised at the questions asked me in regard to the method of teaching. I find that a great many people have the idea that the scholars are taught to sing by rote, or by hearing the teachers sing; this is not the fact. When the children enter school at the age of about five years, they are given a judicious course in rote singing, which serves to awaken the musical feeling which is dormant in the breast of every child to a greater or less degree. This course of pure rote singing only continues about six months, after which they are taught to read music intelligently and by the most approved modern methods.

Perhaps the practical results of the study of music in the schools were never better illustrated than at the mass meetings in the different wards on the cele- bration of " Columbus Day," where the sight of hundreds of school children singing our grand old national airs must have thrilled the hearts of all who heard them.

I cannot close this report without extending my sincere thanks to the faithful regular teachers in the schools, by whom the actual teaching of music is done, and without whose hearty co-operation I could do nothing.

ROBERT F. RAYMOND, Supervisor of Music.

II. REPORT OF PRINCIPAL OF NORTH HIGH SCHOOL.

To I. M. NORCROSS, Superintendent of Schools :

In accordance with the custom of my predecessors, I will make a brief report of the North High School, of which I have been principal since last September. The number of pupils enrolled is one hundred and twenty-nine, which is six - teen more than the total enrolment last year. They are distributed in class and courses as follows : -

In the first class there are now fifteen young ladies and six, young men. Sev- eral of the young ladies and all of the young men are intending to continue their education next year in college, or professional schools.

The entrance class is large, and it gives promise of unusually good " staying qualities." It has entered upon the second term with a loss of but one mem- ber. Present indications point to a still larger entrance class next year.

The courses of study are very satisfactory to teachers and pupils. There seems to be no disposition to avoid the harder courses. The question our pupils ask is " Which course is best for me ?" not "Which is the easiest?" The college preparatory course is popular in spite of the fact that it is recognized as a hard one. In spite of ? May it not be because of its hardness ? What vigorous youth shuns a hill because of its steepness ? To an earnest soul difficulties inspire, if only a worthy end is to be attained.

Preparations for the celebration of " Columbus Day " broke in somewhat on the regular routine. Rehearsals and drills took time, and have necessitated harder work since, but the members of the North High School will remember it as a pleasant, inspiring occasion.

We have been trying to do our share to make the educational exhibit at the World's Fair a success. Class work in Algebra, English, Book-keeping, Geom- etry, Zoology, Latin, and Greek to the amount of more than fifteen hundred pages, has been prepared. It is intended to show, not what our brightest pupils can do, but what whole classes can do, and do do in every day work.

It speaks well for the High School that so many of the graduates and former pupils are interested enough to drop in for an hour or two to see how the school is prospering. Such visits are a help to teachers and pupils.

It is highly desirable to have more visits from the parents. Let me here assure them of a hearty welcome whenever they shall favor us with their pres- ence.

Yours respectfully, A. C. RUSSELL.

CLASS ODE.

WORDS BY AGNES G. DARCY, MUSIC BY R. F. RAYMOND.

As once more we meet as classmates,

Hope's clear radience is cast

On the pathway of a future

Which seems fairer than the past.

Fill the moments with our song,

Last farewells must come ere long.

Let us onward go with courage,

Daring ever to do right ;

In this busy world of action

Each must work with all his might.

Happy school-days now are o'er,

They'll return to us no more.

Life's great labor-field 's before ns, Showing many a devious path ; Each alone must enter boldly,

None his own condition hath ;

Let us each act well his part,

Strong of will and bold of heart.

Though we now so soon must sever All the ties that bind us fast, Yet the memories of each hour, With our mates and teachers passed, In our hearts forever dwell, And our lips forever tell.
