REPORT OF THE OVERSEERS OF THE POOR.

The Overseers of the Poor of the Town of Weymouth submit herewith their annual report, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1892, together with the auditors appraisal of personal property at the almshouse at that date.

ALMSHOUSE.

Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Cummings continued in charge of the alms- house, up to April 1, that being the date agreed upon at the time their resignation was accepted by the board in January last. They were succeeded by Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Cummings, who have conducted the affairs of the institution in a very satisfactery man- ner. The inmates of the house at this date number thirty-four, including boarders, which has been about the average number throughout the year. This is more, it is thought, than were ever provided for there in any single year.

There have had seven deaths in the house during the year, viz., George Loud, John Regan, Wilson B. Torrey, Nora Sheehan, Wil- liam Wildes, Elbridge L. Leach and Josiah M. Pratt : the three last named being boarders.

The cost of maintenance this year has been $2.73 per week, be- ing a reduction of thirteen cents per week from the cost of 1891.

The amount of assistance rendered to poor out of the house has been less than last year, and also the payments to cities and towns for aid rendered to our poor, but the cost of supporting our insane patients at hospitals shows an increase, with the prospect of a fur- ther increase the coming year.

Drs. W. A. Drake and E. N. Mayberry are still serving as Town Physicians, and it is probable that arrangements will be made with them to continue that service for the coming year.

112

The cost for the year for the maintenance of the town's poor has- been $9,974.95, and there has been expended an account of the poor of the State, cities and towns, and for other purposes (which will be refunded to the treasury) the sum $2.132.85. Mak- ing the total expenditure for the year in poor account $12,107.80. The appropriation including balance from 1891 was $13,552.03, leaving an unexpended balance of $1,444.23 which will not be sufficient to cover the expense of this department to the close of the financial year. At the last annual meeting it was' voted to raise and appropriate the sum of $10,000 for the support of poor, but no appropriation was made to cover the payment of sundry hospital bills, neither for payments on account of aid rendered to the poor belonging to other places, all of which is afterwards re- paid to our treasurer, the sum of such repayments the present year being as before stated, $2,132.85. An appropriation should be- made to cover this deficiency.

Respectfully submitted,

J. CLARENCE HOWE, HENRY A. NASH, LEONARD V. TIRRELL, GEO. H. BICKNELL, · HIRAM E. RAYMOND,

Overseers of the Poor.
