I hope before the end of another year to show a decided im- provement in our schools in articulation, in power of the pupils over new words, and in spelling.
In closing this report I desire to express my sense of obligation to parents, teachers, and members of the school committee, for their continued confidence and cooperation.
Respectfully submitted,
I. M. NORCROSS,
Superintendent.

Shake off this Lethe deep, Be not a clinging clod, Awake thyself from sleep; Put all thy trust in God ! Thy strength may not be full, Bend low if need must be, Right hard will come the pull, "Row on!" thou'lt soon be free!
Spurn not the aid of friend; The arm that's strong to act, The ear quick to attend, The eye that beams with tact.
The hate of foe, fear not, On thine own self rely, New strength is thus begot All trouble to defy.
March on with dauntless might, Push toward the goal with zeal, Dim though its peak to sight, Thou'lt high Olympus scale. Then strive on to the end. For dark so'er it seem, Some friendly star will send To thee a guiding beam.

CLASS ODE.
Written by JENNIE S. CLOUGH.
In the years now left behind us, We've been building strong and sure Boats to sail upon Life's ocean, Storms and rough winds to endure. Every day we've added something To the making of each boat, Until now they stand quite ready To brave storms or idly float. As we go forth proudly sailing, Though the waters calmly flow, We'll press on with earnest effort, Determined not to drift, but row. When the storms of life shall meet us, Trusting in our Captain's might, "'Row, not drift," shall be our watch word, Ever onward for the right.

VIII. BOOKS FOR COLLATERAL READING.
For reading, in connection with the school work, the following list of books is recommended. The figures at the right of each title show that the book is now in Tufts Library. Others will be added as soon as there is a general call for them. No attempt at grading has been made.
As what the child reads determines in a large measure the "quality of mind and tendency of character," parents and teachers should unite in their efforts to direct the reading of the children. Teachers can do no more valuable work in school than to develop in their pupils a love for good reading; but to do this successfully, they must love good reading themselves. I think it is not too much to ask that teachers become familiar with a suffi- cient number of the books named in this list to talk freely with the children about them. They should suggest books, not only helpful in themselves but interesting to the children, always keep- ing in mind that "The most instructive reading for a person of any age, old or young, is that in which the author's tone of thought is above the average tone of the reader's thought and yet not be- yond his grasp."
A list of pedagogical books is given herewith, especially for the teachers.
