of the old safe and the construction of the new safe, who shall receive a reasonable compensation for that service.


The Moderator appointed the following persons to serve on the above committee, viz. :-


Francis A. Bicknell, Nathan D. Canterbury, Francis M. Drown, Cassius Tirrell.


Art. 28. Voted, That $7,000 be raised and appropriated for electric lighting for one year's service.


Voted, To discontinue one arc light at Nash's Corner, and to put in two incandescent lights at Nash's Corner and one at Highland Place.


Art. 29. Voted, That, for the purpose of procuring a temp- orary loan to and for the use of the Town of Weymouth, in anti- cipation of the taxes of the present municipal year, the Town Treasurer is hereby authorized and directed to borrow, from time to time, with the approval of the majority of the Selectmen of said town, a sum or sums in the aggregate amounting to one hundred and thirty thousand dollars, and to execute and deliver the note or notes of the town therefor, payable within one year from the time the loan is made.


Art. 30. Voted, To adopt the design presented in the printed report of the present year for a town seal after changing the date 1622 to 1623, and to drop the final "t" in Wessagussett.


The Moderator appointed the following tellers and administered the oath to them, viz. :-


Francis H. Cowing and Joseph A. Cushing.


Art. 31. Voted that the sum of $24,920 be appropriated from the income of the water works for the current year to be expended for the following purposes, viz : $17,920 for the payment of the interest on the Weymouth Water Loan Bonds be- coming due the ensuing year; $1,400 for the salary of the Superintendent of the Works; $900 for the salary of the Engi- neer of the Pumping Station; $1,700 for the maintenance of the works and $3,000 for all other necessary expenses.


Art. 32. Voted that $8,960 be appropriated out of the in- come of the water works to be paid to the Trustees of the Sinking

Fund to be set apart and invested as a Sinking Fund for the pay- ment at maturity of the Weymouth Water Works Loan Bonds.


Voted, to adjourn until 1.15 o'clock.


At 1.15 o'clock the meeting was again called to order.


The committee appointed to nominate an Appropriation Com- mittee made the following nominations.

Art. 34. Voted, That $5,000 be appropriated from money received from Corporation, National Bank or Street Railway taxes for the water rent and care of hydrants and drinking fountains.


Art. 35. Voted, That the sum of $10,000 be appropriated for the purpose of building a four-room schoolhouse on the lot now occupied by the present school buildings at Nash's Corner ; also that of this sum $2,500 be raised by taxation and that the Treasurer be authorized, with the approval of the Selectmen, to borrow the balance of $7,500 and to issue therefor the note of the town to mature in 1910.


Voted, Not to reconsider the above vote.

Voted, That the following committee be appointed to carry the above vote into effect : Bradford Hawes, William A. Drake, George C. Torrey, Thomas H. Melville, John Seabury and Theron Tirrell.


Voted, That when the building is completed it be called the Nash School.


Art. 36. Voted, That $50 be raised and appropriated for the care and improvement of the public parks.


Art. 37. Voted, That $377.88 be raised and appropriated to be used, together with the balance of $952.32 now in the treas- ury, for the payment to James L. Bates for land taken on Great Hill for park purposes.


Art. 38. Voted, To authorize the Selectmen to enter suit if deemed necessary, for the recovery of money expended for removal of snow on account of street railway companies.


Art. 39. Voted, That $5,000 be raised and appropriated to be paid into the sinking fund for the payment at maturity of the High School bonds.


Art. 40. Voted, That this Article in relation to adopting an amendment to the By-Laws of the town providing for the establish- ment of a curfew ordinance be submitted to the School Committee, to formulate a by-law and to report to the next annual meeting.


Previous to taking the above vote, Warren T. Simpson was appointed a teller by the Moderator, who administered the oath to him.


Art. 41. Voted, to instruct the Board of Selectmen to pay $2.00 per day to all able-bodied men for work performed by the town, whether by contract or otherwise, and preference to be given to citizens and taxpayers, but this vote shall not debar the Select- men from employing men and boys who are not able to do a full day's work at a less rate.


Art. 42. Voted, To authorize the Board of Selectmen to convey by proper deed, in behalf of the town, the title to a small piece of land located at or near Lincoln square, in Ward 3, Weymouth, said land being a portion of the lockup lot in said square, to S. Jane Clapp, in exchange for the same number of square feet of land, approximately, which said Clapp is to deed

to the town, and which adjoins said lockup lot, the transaction simply having the effect of making a slight change in the direction of the easterly line of said lot.


Art. 43. Voted, That $2,500 be raised and appropriated for the purpose of building a stone or Macadam road on that portion of Commercial street, beginning at Washington square, and extending so far toward the crossing of the N. Y., N. H. & H. R. R., as the appropriation will permit.


Art. 44. Voted, That $600 be raised and appropriated for the purpose of working the widening of Pleasant street near the East Weymouth Cemetery, as laid out by the County Commission- ers in 1871.


Art. 45. Voted, That this matter be referred to the Selectmen, and if in their judgment work has been done for which payment should be made by the town, they be hereby authorized to reimburse the East Weymouth Cemetery Association for such work to an amount not exceeding $200 and that this sum be raised and appropriated for this purpose.


Art. 46. Voted, That $4,000 be raised and appropriated and that the Treasurer be authorized, with the approval of the Select- men, to borrow $10,000 for the payment of a note of $14,000, due May 9, 1900, and issue for the same two notes of the town to mature respectively 1909 and 1910.


Art. 47. Voted, That $4,441.16 be appropriated for over- drafts and deficiencies, and that the same be applied as follows : $805.93 for repairs of highways, $77.82 for wall on Bridge street, $720 for Hingham and Quincy bridges, $72 work on Essex street, $60 land damage, $205.41 for setting curb stones, $500 for Fire Department, $500 for miscellaneous and $1,500 for the support of the poor.


Art. 48. Voted, That all taxes shall become due and payable on or before the tenth day of October next, and that the Collector be instructed to collect forthwith, according to law, all taxes re- maining unpaid after that date, with interest at the rate of six per cent. per annum, and that the salary of the Collector be the same as last year, six mills.

Art. 49. Voted to accept and adopt the Jury list as printed, after making the following changes :


Striking out the name of George Hollis, John Taylor, Maurice F. Greaney, Leonard C. Embree, Charles H. Pratt, Leonard W. Cain and Charles R. Denbroeder.


Adding the names of Benj. R. Beals, James C. Healey, Charles H. Williams and Richard R. Bolles.


Art. 50. Voted that $500 be raised and appropriated for the working of Centre street.


Art. 51. Voted that $400 be raised and appropriated for the working of the extension of Granite street.


Art. 52. Voted that $300 be raised and appropriated for changing the grade of a portion of Washington street near the house of Silas W. Newcomb.


Art. 53. Voted that the article in relation to laying water pipes on Washington street be referred to the Water Commision- ers with full power.


Art. 54. Voted, To accept the report of the Selectmen on laying out a new street, from a point on Main street near the house of N. R. Ells on Front street, to be called Lawton street.


Art. 55. Voted, That $2,500 be raised and appropriated for the purpose of Macadamizing a part of Broad street, begin- ning at a point near the junction with Madison street and extend- ing so far toward Jackson Square as the appropriation will per- mit.


Art. 56. Voted, That $200 be raised and appropriated for the purpose of building a sidewalk on Tower avenue.


Art. 57. Voted, That $200 be raised and appropriated for the purpose of working the unfinished part of Bay View street.


Art. 58. Voted, That $100 be raised and appropriated for improving the sidewalk on Summit street, adjacent to Webb Park.


Art. 59. Voted, The changing the name of North Square, be indefinitely postponed.

Art. 60. No action was taken on this Article, as the legal name of the street is Cowing Place and not Cowing avenue, as stated in the article.


Art. 61. Voted, That this Article in relation to disposing of the North High School building and lot be referred to the Com- mittee on Town Officers, with full power.


Voted, That if the property is sold, the Town Treasurer be authorized to give a proper deed.


Voted, To take up Article 3. Gordon Willis was elected Tree Warden by ballot.


Voted, That the salary of the Tree Warden be left with the Selectmen.


Voted, That the thanks of the town be extended Louis A. Cook, Esq., for the able and impartial manner in which he has conducted this meeting as its Moderator.


Voted, To adjourn.

NORFOLK, SS. To either of the Constables in the Town of Wey- mouth, in said County. GREETING :-


In the name of the Commonwealth you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhabitants of Weymouth aforesaid, qualified to vote in elections, to meet at Music Hall, in South Weymouth, on Friday the first day of June next, at eight o'clock in the evening, then and there to act on the following articles, namely :-


Article 1. To choose a Moderator.

Art. 2. On petition, to see if the town will authorize the building committee appointed at the last annual meeting for the purpose of erecting a new school house at Nash, to sell the old buildings now on the lot, to be removed, and appropriate the pro- ceeds of such sale towards the construction of the new house in addition to the amount voted at the said meeting.


Art. 3. On petition, to see if the town will authorize the said building committee to purchase additional land for the school house lot, and raise or appropriate any amount of money for that purpose, and also to sell any buildings standing on land which may be so purchased; the proceeds of such sale to be used in paying for such land.


Art. 4. On petition, to see if the town will take such action as will restore the name of "Shaw" to the school on Main street, in ward four.


Art. 5. To see if the town will vote to change the name of North square to Adams square.


And you are directed to serve this warrant by posting attested copies thereof in three public places in each precinct in said town, seven days at least before the time of said meeting.


Hereof, fail not, and make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon to the Town Clerk, at or before the time of said meeting.

SPECIAL TOWN MEETING.


Pursuant to the foregoing warrant, a meeting of the inhabitants of the Town of Weymouth was held at Music Hall, South Wey- mouth on Friday June 1, 1900, the meeting being called to order at 8 o'clock P. M. and the warrant read by the Town clerk.


Art. 1. Louis A. Cook Esq., was elected Moderator by ballot, the check list being used in the election.


Art. 2. Voted, That the building committee appointed at the last annual meeting for the purpose of erecting a new school house at Nash, be authorized to sell the old buildings on the lot to be removed. The Moderator appointed E. B. Nevin and Theron L. Tirrell as tellers and administered the oath to them. A motion was made under this article to appropriate the proceeds from the sale of the building but it was not carried, 100 voters not voting in favor of the motion, the result of the vote being yes 94.


Art. 3. No action was taken under this article.


Art. 4. Voted, To indefinitely postpone action under this article. Yes 40. No 35.


Art. 5. Voted, To change the name of North Sq. to Adams Square.
