Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7 | Part 8 | Part 9 | Part 10 | Part 11 | Part 12 | Part 13 | Part 14 | Part 15

I began my administration under some disadvantages, the most serious of which was the very unusual number of changes in the teaching force of the school. Five new teachers began work in September and as my relations with the pupils were to be of a considerable different nature from that in previous years it really amounted to a sixth change, thus leaving but two of the corps unchanged. Some of the new teachers have stepped into the places of their predecessors with ease while others have found more difficulty in adapting themselves to our requirements, but all have shown a most commendable spirit.

Partly in consideration of the strain involved, in acquainting the pupils with the personality and methods of so many new in- structors and partly because my predecessor's system of adminis- tration seemed to me to be, for the most part, excellent, I have made but few changes, the principal one being in the method of conducting rhetoricals.

As far as the brief period of trial warrants an opinion both teachers and pupils report satisfaction with the change. The plan will, I think, throw most of the work of preparation upon the pupil where it properly belongs to get the best results.

Considering the circumstances it seems to me that the school is in as good condition as could reasonably be expected and the regular work has gone on with only such interruptions as unavoid- ably occur.

For this result I wish to thank the committee for their support, the pupils for their helpful spirit and my assistant teachers for their hearty co-operation.

14

The enrollment during the year has reached 245, divided as follows : - Seniors 41, juniors 50, sophomores 64, freshmen 89, special 1. At the present writing the number has dropped to 229, several by removal to other towns and the remainder largely from the freshman class who were unable or unwilling to do the work required.

Owing to the great demand for stenography and typewriting in the upper classes it has been necessary to arrange for the use of the typewriters when the commercial teacher is busy elsewhere. The teacher assigns work and the pupils use spare study periods for practice, thus keeping the machines in use all day. If the demand in this department increases two or three more type- writers will be needed.

Drawing has attracted more than usual interest and about sixty pupils are producing excellent results each week.

The elective system is now in full operation and brings in the main good results. There is, however, too much of an inclina- tion on the part of the parents to allow their children to elect the bare limit required when they could easily and profitably do more. I am not yet reconciled to the belief that the pupils know what is for their highest good in this matter.

Outside of the regular work of the class room there is little to record. A second concert in aid of the piano fund was given last November. The pupils again co-operated in the sale of tickets and in spite of considerable expense the sum of fifty- seven dollars was netted.

On Dec. 23, through the generosity of Reynold's Relief Corps No. 102 a handsome silk American flag was presented to the school and now awaits a suitable mount in the assembly hall.

In closing I wish to call attention to the fact that in spite of an idea which some entertain to the contrary the high school goes on fitting its graduates to enter either by examination or certifi- cate any university, college or normal school in New England in many of which we now have recent graduates doing successful work.

Thanking you for your hearty support I respectfully submit this account of my stewardship to date.

EDWIN R. SAMPSON, Principal.

Benediction

Rev. H. W. Kimball

CLASS ODE.

Standing on the portals of the vast and vague unknown. All unconscious, dreaming, wond'ring, weak, yet not alone, Hardly daring to upraise the standard hope unfurled, We pause before the open door through which we seek the world. For just one fleeting moment do we give our time to play, Tomorrow or the next will us find each upon his way. With hopes inspired by youth alone, we paint the future fair, And dwell on dreams we know are naught but castles in the air.

CHORUS.

Onward! Never man yet won who never dared aspire. Upward ! Let our object each succeeding day be higher. Molding into character the very best we can, So fulfil the purpose of His wise and perfect plan.

Ent'ring on the duties that bestrew the new life's way, Shall they seem not lighter for the pleasures gleaned today? Shall not every little scene be treasured 'mid the tears, And glow 'mong mem'ry's embers on the hearth of coming years? We should not sadly seek the earnest work that doth await, 'Though thoughtful in intent, let ne'er our cheerfulness abate. Go forth holding out a hand alike to friend and neighbor, Knowing that the highest crown is won through love and labor.
