REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES OF TUFTS LIBRARY.
The Board of Trustees respectfully submit their twenty-ninth annual report as follows :
The Library was open 304 days for the delivery of books during the year 1907. 48,208 volumes were loaned for home use, an average of 159- per day. The largest number of books loaned on any one day was 458 on February 23 and the smallest number was 21 on August 21. 20,282 volumes were distributed to borrowers through the different Delivery Stations as follows :

CLASSIFICATION OF CIRCULATION.
Arts, .030 ; biography, .016; fiction, including juvenile, .713 ; history, .033; literature, .022; natural science, .018; poetry, .011; social science, .010; theology, ,003; travels, .029; peri- odicals, .115.
The statistics show practically no decrease in the per cent of fiction but, to quote the "Dial," "Public library borrowers of fiction are much fewer in proportion to the whole number of pub- lic-library patrons, than an unthinking reader of circulation sta- tistics would infer. *** Probably not more than a quarter of the card-holders *** are readers of novels only. Indeed, it is probable that not so many as one quarter read nothing more serious than story-books from January to December; and even readers of innumerable novels may actually spend more time over a few serious books than over fiction in the course of the year.
Ten historical or scientific works might easily demand more hours of reading and study than a hundred novels of the day."
212
WORK WITH THE SCHOOLS.
938 volumes have been loaned to the teachers. Schools have been supplied, as in previous years, with collections of books ; the circulation in this way amounting to 3,187.
REGISTRATION OF BORROWERS.
Cards have been given to 518 new applicants, and 180 have taken the non-fiction cards 23 students cards have been issued.
The applications since the last registration number 5,829.
EXAMINATION OF BOOKS.
The annual examination was made as usual; 17 volumes are missing ; 1 book that was lost has been paid for by the borrower ; 5 books reported missing last year have been recovered; 580 soiled and worn books have been withdrawn and many more must be discarded soon.
ACCESSIONS.
During the year 648 volumes have been added to the Library, including 93 donated, 71 replacing worn copies and 43 periodicals. Some books on technical subjects have been purchased and the departments of Music and French have been strengthened by a few additions.
See Appendix A for the more important books added during the year 1907, including a list of those purchased from the Susannah Hunt Stetson Fund.
CATALOGUES.
Work on the much needed Class List or Bulletin is considerably advanced and if an appropriation be made sufficient to cover the expense of printing, the bulletin may soon be issued.
READING AND REFERENCE ROOM.
The History of all nations, Wright, gen. ed .- 24 volumes ; Who's who for 1907; and the Statesman's year book for 1907 have been placed in the Reference Department. Since August 1, by means of new Hall Slips, a record has been kept of books borrowed from the circulating department for use in the Reading Room. 273 volumes have been used in this way since that date.
No statistics can show the extent to which the reference books themselves are used, but the importance of this department can-
213
not be overestimated and more people should avail themselves of the privileges which it offers. The librarians are always glad to render any service within their power, here, as well as in other branches of the library work.
The list of periodicals varies little from that of last year. Am- ateur Work and Birds and Nature have been discontinned, the former having been merged into the Electrician and Mechanic and the latter purchased by Suburban Life.
See Appendix B for the list of periodicals.
ART EXHIBITIONS.
The Library Art Club exhibitions during the year have includ- ed photographs of Italian fountains ; Florence, No. 1 ; Salisbury ; New Zealand ; China ; Famous pictures, No. 3; Norway, No. 1; Famous pictures, No. 6 ; Sargent's works ; Famous pictures, No. 5; New Brunswick ; Ireland; American parks ; Representative art ; Russia ; Hundred famous men.
GIFTS.
Books and pamphlets have been received from 41 different sources together with annual reports, bulletins and other publica- tions from 41 libraries. The gift of Edmund S. Hunt, of three copies of his "Reminiscences," one of them handsomely illustrated by many photographs, is a valuable addition to the library.
The most important gift of the year was that of $5,000 from the late Augustus J. Richards, the former President of the Board of Trustees, the income of which is to be devoted to the purchase of new books.
It is with gratitude that the Trustees report this gift the larg- est since the foundation of the Library.
A list of donors may be found in Appendix C.
The Library hours are 2 to 8 p. m. ; Wednesday, 2 to 5 p. m. ; Saturday, 2 to 9 p. m. ; Sundays, Legal Holidays, New Year's Day and the 17th of June excepted. During July and August the Library closes at 6 p. m. on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday ; Wednesday and Saturday, as usual.
All adult residents of Weymouth who sign an agreement to abide by the rules of the Library, are entitled to two cards, the

regular and non-fiction card. Children, nine years old and over, who desire cards must obtain permission from one of the Trustees. The Teacher's Card and the Student's Card allow the holder to take ten books for special study, which books will be renewed once without request.
The crowded condition of the shelves,-where, especially in Arts and Travels, there was no space for new volumes-required the moving of about 20,000 books, so that the circulation depart- ment now occupies 3 more stacks than formerly. This necessi- tated carrying many public documents to the floor above. Two boys from the Grammar school were hired to assist in the work.
Collections of 100 or more volumes of fiction, taken in regular order from the shelves, have been placed on the table in the De- livery Room, each collection remaining not less than two weeks. These, with the books in the Revolving Cases and those in the Children's Case give the borrowers free access to about 400 vol- umes at once. Free access in its fullest meaning cannot be granted as yet, because of the expense involved.
The interior of the Library is much improved by the re-decora- tion of the walls and ceilings, which work was done during the spring. A temporary stair-case has been added to the tower on Commercial street, thus affording a much needed second exit. The Reading Room was made more comfortable during the warm weather by the placing of awnings over the five windows on the south side; the awnings on the four windows in the Delivery Room were renewed.
An extra appropriation of at least $300 will be necessary to put the wood-work in good condition, as it is rapidly becoming discolored. It will need a larger expenditure to bleach and refinish it unless it is attended to at once. This cannot be done from the regular appropriation, for with the constant replacing and repair- ing of worn books besides the purchasing of new ones, the current expenses are necessarily increasing. Notwithstanding the in- crease in accessions and the consequent greater expense in caring for a larger number of books, our appropriation has remained about the same for several years.
CLARENCE P. WHITTLE,
By order and in behalf of the Trustees.
