ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PARK COMMISSIONERS
December 31, 1943
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen: Gentlemen :
The Park Commissioners submit the following report for the year ending December 31, 1943.
The routine work of the Park Department has been continued and the usual care has been given to the parks, greens, and flower gardens.
More attention has been paid to the playgrounds which we feel are gaining in importance each year. We have been very fortunate to have the energetic, inspiring supervisor, Mr. Chiorse, continue his work with the children. With the curtailing of travel to other places of recreation, during war time, we are recommending that the playground period be extended two additional weeks during the season of 1944.
Respectfully Submitted EVERETT J. McINTOSH Chairman CHARLES W. BURGESS Clerk 1 ARTHUR J. NEGUS

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN ENGINEER
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen of Weymouth, Gentlemen :
My thirty-seventh annual report as Town Engineer is herewith sub- mitted. Your Board has requested that the report be brief.
An examination of my previous reports will show the scope of the town survey work which continues as heretofore and includes Registry, Probate, and Land Court work; surveys, location of buildings, new tracings to replace those worn from constant use, and all work necessary for the revision of the Assessor's plans to January 1st of each succeeding year.
155
The work has been substantially increased since the adoption of the Block System in 1939 and further augmented by natural increases.
During 1943 the descriptions of nearly two thousand parcels as de- scribed in various legal documents were copied and used on the revision of the plans. While the new dwellings were less than in 1942 the number of changes made, including dwellings, garages, other buildings, changes in existing buildings, buildings removed, and hydrants located, numbered about three hundred and eighty-seven.
On the block system above referred to there were approximately 626 blocks and about 12,666 parcels or parts of parcels on the revision to January 1st, 1943; these were increased in 1943. Twenty-nine new stone bounds were set the past year and other old ones moved, raised and reset. The usual municipal surveying or engineering, somewhat curtailed in 1943, due to labor shortage, etc. was done for your Board or other Town Departments.
There seemed to be an urgent need for an Atlas showing the block system and up to date as regards ownership, to be published for the use of the Assessors, and your Board has authorized the printing of a limited number and these will be ready during the early part of 1944 for their use, with a few available for sale.
Due to the loss of assistants on account of the war and the difficulty of obtaining proper additional help I have not done all that I wished the past year but hope to remedy same during 1944.
For the continued courtesy of your Board, other Town Officials and Departments, and from citizens of the Town I wish to extend my thanks. Respectfully Submitted RUSSELL H. WHITING Town Engineer
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF STREETS
January 11, 1944
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen Gentlemen :
In the late summer of 1942, the Government released sufficient quantities of bituminous materials to enable the department, not only to resurface sections of North Street from Bridge Street to East Street, and Commercial Street from Commercial Square to the Hingham town line, but also, to surface treat, with tar, more streets than had been anticipated.
Streets Accepted and Constructed
Jaffrey Street Epping Street
Morningside Path -from Lambert Avenue to Greycliff Road.
The construction of Fuller Road and Weham Road were completed during the year. Brae Road was accepted by the Town in 1942, but as the release of property had not been secured, no construction could legally be done.
A section of the sea wall on Wessagussett Road from station 4+00 to 7+20 was constructed.

ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DENTAL CLINIC
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen Gentlemen :
Total number of patients 508
Total number of permanent fillings 501
Total number of deciduous fillings 157
Total number of permanent extractions 42 Total number of deciduous extractions 94
Total number of prophylaxis treatments 157
Since the opening of the fall term of school, the Dental Clinic has tried to bring forth a program of complete dental care to all school children of the lower income group, which includes fillings, extractions and prophylaxis treatments. While our facilities are limited we are striving to accomplish a feat which is enormous in proportion to the time we have and the large number of school children requiring dental care.
Up until this time we have only been able to care for the pupils in the first six grades of five schools. We have an enormous number of pupils urgently requiring dental care in the balance of the schools to be done and it is our aim to accomplish complete dental care to the pupils of the first and sixth grades first and to care for the other grades as much as possible.
It is the aim of the Dental Clinic to save as many teeth in our children as we possibly can. In the past year we have been able to complete the dental care in a greater number of children than in pre- vious years due to the splendid cooperation of the doctors, principals and teachers, also to the janitors for their capable assistance in trans- porting the children to and from the dental clinic.
In the coming year we hope that we can complete our programas planned so that the dental clinic will continue to be a success.
Respectfully submitted MARY A. URACIUS Dental Hygienist
ANNUAL REPORT OF THE TOWN COUNCIL .
January 14, 1944
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Gentlemen :
I hereby submit my report as Town Council for the year ending December 1, 1943.
The law department can report fairly that it has experienced one of the best years it has had since the present incumbent has served in the capacity of town council. No suits that could be classified of major importance have been entered either by or against the town. Several pending matters have been disposed of.
The usual number of claims or suits for damages have been brought or are pending. Not many of these ever go to trial, but rather are adjusted as the result of conference and compromise without litigation. As a con- sequence of an amendment to Chapter 118A of the General Laws the so called Old Age Assistance Law-the state department of public welfare has inaugurated a policy of compelling the children of an applicant for such assistance to support the parent in so far as his means enables him
158
so to do and in proportion to what his own obligations and earnings are. We have already had several of these cases in Court with successful results. This may reduce in some degree the amount, of money the town has been expending under this item.
I wish to again thank you and the various town officials and employees for the kind cooperation and courtesies extended to me during the year. Respectfully submitted KENNETH L. NASH January 14, 1944 .
