Meeting called to order at 7.40 o'clock p.m., by Moderator Eaton who read call for meeting.

Article I. To see if the town will extend the time in which the High School Building Committee was instructed to begin the erection of a High School Building in its vote under Article 23 of the Spring Town Warrant of 1917 from March, 1918, to March, 1919 .- John J. Round.
Motion by J. J. Round.
That the town extend the time in which the erection of a High School may be begun from March 1918 to March 31, 1919.
On Motion by M. Lowe.
Voted: That subject matter of this article be laid upon the table.
Article 2. To see if the town will accept the provisions of Chapter 372 of the Special Acts of the Legislature of Massachusetts passed in the year 1917, and being entitled as follows: "An Act relative to the offices of Park and Cemetery Commissioners, Engineer of the Fire Department, Tree Warden and Local Superintendent for the Suppression of Gypsy and Brown Tail Moths in the town of Wakefield."

Article 4. To see if the town will adopt as amendments to its by-laws in substance the following :- To Article 3 of the By-Laws. "Section 9. No officer, elected or appointed, no member of a board or committee and no agent or employee of the town shall be interested financially, directly or indirectly, in any contract made or approved in behalf of the town by himself, or by any board or committee of which he is a member or for which he may act as agent. No board shall appoint one of its members to a position under or for said board for which compensation is paid."

No increase in the amount requested for and by a depart- ment of the town or in the amount named in any article in a warrant for a town meeting shall be voted at the session of the meeting at which the motion shall be referred to the finance committee which shall report thereon at the next session of said meeting."
Mr. J. J. Round offered as amendment to the By-Laws the following:
To Article 3 of the By-Laws

Article 6. To see if the town will instruct the Board of Selectmen to grant the employees of the Electric Light, Gas, Water, Sewer, Highway and Moth Departments Saturday afternoons off the year around, without loss of pay .- William M. Hanly.

Voted: That the Selectmen, the Municipal Light Commissioners and the Water and Sewerage Commissioners are hereby respectively authorized and instructed to grant a Sat. half holiday throughout the year, commencing January 1, 1918, without loss of pay, to the town employees, in the highway and moth departments, the municipal light plant and the water and sewerage departments.

This Town Report contains the names of the enlisted men from Wakefield for which we are indebted to the Daily Item. It has been compiled by them with great care and is doubtless as correct as it is possible for such a list to be. By special vote of the Board of Selectmen, this list is included in the Town Report. It may be some satisfaction for these young men to learn that a

Gentlemen :- I hereby respectfully submit my report for the year 1917. Permits have been issued for the following:
17 One-family dwellings.
1 Two-family dwelling.
44 Garages.
6 Storehouses.
7 Barns and wagon-sheds.
2 Hen-houses.
1 Boilerhouse.
1 Coal elevator.
1 School-house.
10 Additions and alterations. Total 90. Estimated cost, $104,320.
I have made 315 inspections. I have also inspected several old buildings, had chimneys, stairs and other dangerous parts made safe. Ordered one old barn taken down which was done. I have inspected 34 elevators, 1 lodging- house and reported to the chief of the district police.

Gentlemen :- I respectfully submit the following report for the year 1917. There were 15 accident cases, seven of which received compensation and medical treatment, eight received medical treatment only, total expense of $466.63. There are none on the list at the present time.

Report of Fire Engineers
Report of Fire Engineers to the Honorable Board of Selectmen.
The annual report of the Board of Fire Engineers is herewith presented, giving the records of fires that have occurred during the year, with the losses on same, as near as can be estimated, and such other information that may be of interest to the Town.
THE DEPARTMENT APPARATUS AND HOSE
The force of the Department is the same as in our previous reports. The apparatus is in good condition with the exception of the Volunteer Hose truck which is in very poor repair. This piece was purchased in 1908 and

was second hand at that time and has about outlived its usefulness. We are of the opinion that it will have to be replaced by a more modern piece of apparatus in the near future.
During the year all the hose has been tested and 900 feet has been con- demned, being of no value to the town; 300 has been relined and 1200 feet of new hose has been purchased. There is now 6,100 feet of hose in the department.
RECORD OF FIRES
During the year the Department has responded to 148 alarms, divided as follows: 111 still and 37 box alarms. This is an increase of 23 alarms over last year. The box alarms and the still alarms which involved loss are:
Monday, January 1st, 12.37 a.m. Box 32. A slight fire in the Bay State car Barns on Water Street, caused by overheated electric wires. Loss small.
