The Board has held its meetings regularly every Tuesday night.
In May the Board appointed a Committee of twelve citizens to act as the Wakefield Safety Council, its duties being to make such recom- mendations and give such publicity to the townspeople that the record of accidents, fatal and non-fatal, would be reduced. Governor Fuller having offered a prize to the community having the best percentage for reduction in accidents, it was possible to have a goal for which to strive. Wakefield stood second or third throughout most of the period from June 1st to November 30th, inclusive.
In October the Board authorized the hooking up of the board of the police signal system with the central fire station.
In November the Selectmen voted to sell the buildings on the Shedd Estate, Cordis Street, for $402.00, as per vote of the town.
The State and County have been asked for assistance in the rebuild- ing of Water Street from the Boston & Maine R. R. crossing to Melvin Street. Total cost esimated to be $9,000.00.
During the year various hearings have been attended by the mem- bers of the Board. One of the hearings was held at Danvers, on the petition of the Eastern Massachusetts Electric Company, which asked for permission to use the abandoned rights of way formerly belonging to the Boston & Maine R. R. but now owned or leased by the Electric Com- pany, for high tension lines on steel towers. The Wakefield selectmen protested against the petition as did every other town and city affect- ed. The Public Utilities Board granted the petition, however, and fur- ther action will be in the hands of the various committees when applica- tion is made to cross the highways.
During the year alterations and repairs have been made in the town hall. The office formerly occupied by the Municipal Light Dept., was divided, giving offices to the Chief of Police, Highway Engineer, Board of Public Welfare and the Janitor. The men's toilet in the basement was renovated, wiring changed, and painted white enamel. The entire first story of the town hall has had the walls cleaned or painted and in some cases the ceilings done over. The floor of the main lobby has been
64

cleaned and the town hall now is clean and bright in contrast to many municipal buildings.
The Selectmen wish to express their thanks and appreciation to the other Boards and officals, who have given such excellent co-operation. Especially do we thank Harry A. Simonds, Clerk of the Selectmen for his able and untiring assistance.
We ask that the consideration and co-operation of the townspeople and the officials of the town continue, in order that efficiency and harmony may be secured in the interests of the town.
J. THEODORE WHITNEY ARTHUR E. NEWCOMB THOMAS F. KENNEY ROLAND W. BUTTERS

Report of Moth Superintendent
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen.
Wakefield, Mass., January 1, 1927. Gentlemen :
I herewith submit my report as Superintendent of the Moth Depart- ment for the year ending December 31, 1927.
This year the Gypsy moths have increased about 25 per cent over last year. The Browntail and Satin moths are about the same as last year.
We have planted 100 young trees where they were needed this year and expect to put out as many next year. This year we have about 4000 young trees in our Nursery.
This year we spent $2,221.26 for moth work, $2,221.57 for trim- ming and taking down trees, $1,621.13 for spraying, $612.13 for cutting brush, $129.00 for vacations.
For other expenditures and appropriatons of this department see Town Accountant's report.
Respectfully submitted,
JOHN A. LANDRY, Supt. of Moth Dept.
65
REPORT OF PLANNING BOARD
Report of Planning Board
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen Gentlemen :
The Town Planning Board herewith submits to you its report for the year ending December 31, 1927.
On September 27, 1927, E. M. Bridge again became a member of the board, filling a vacancy which had existed for some time. Due to the pressure of his private practice and the conflict of the time of his of- fice hours and the Board meetings, Dr. Frank T. Woodbury resigned the chairmanship of the Board. E. M. Bridge was elected to the chairman- ship.
The zoning law has operated well during the past year-changes have been slight. Its beneficial effects are becoming apparent and the townspeople are more and more turning to it for the protection of their property.
It is hoped that the revision of the Town Building Law, which is now in process, will soon be completed and accepted, so that, under its authority and that of the zoning law, the town will have adequate con- trol of the construction of building and use of property.
Several projects which should receive serious consideration during the coming year are --
The widening of Center Street.
The widening of Oak Street.
The adoption of a standard curb radius for street corners and the elimination of sharp corners everywhere in the much travelled part of the town, together with the removal of trees and the re-location of poles at such corners.
The provision of public convenience stations at the park.
The drainage and reclaiming of swamp land just east of the center of the town to bring the Industrial zone into use.
Respectfully submitted,
E. M. BRIDGE, Chairman L. A. BRISSETTE, Secretary T. FULTON PARKS FRANK T. WOODBURY WILLIAM G. ROBERTS.
