A remedial reading school was held for five weeks during the sum- mer. Much interest was shown in this new venture and it is planned to continue it in 1956.
FROM THE REPORTS OF THE SUPERVISORS
Art, Helen E. Corbet
We hope to develop in the grades a growing recognition and appre- ciation of good design and composition, pleasing form, fine color selec- tion, and a sense of fitness to purpose in the use of materials. This should be absorbed in the course of the daily lessons.
We are working with paper, crayons, paint, scissors and clay. In- dividual classes have used paper maché, another stencil work and block printing, many have tried paper sculpture.
Music, instrumental, Robert D. Chandler
Four hundred and fifty children in the third grades are participat- ing in group lessons with the "Flutophone," learning the fundamentals of music, and, we believe, developing an interest in music.
One hundred and sixty students are taking part in the work of the following musical organizations - instrumental groups at the Warren, Montrose, Woodville and Greenwood School, band and orchestra in the junior high, and band and orchestra in the senior high.
As in past years private and class instruction is being given under the direction of the music department in trumpet, lower brass instru- ments, clarinet and saxophone, drums, cello and double bass, flute and violin. The individual teachers are handling 130 pupils weekly.
The size of the senior high school band and orchestra has been re- duced by the introduction of the 6-3-3 plan, but the size of both band and orchestra in the junior high school indicates that this will be only temporary.
Music, elementary, Barbara M. Paasche
A program of singing, rhythmic activities, creative activities, listen- ing and playing, is being used to create an appreciation of music in the individual child. A good reading program is needed since many of the children are musically illiterate, and such a program will require a good period of time.
A mixed glee club, meeting twice a week, has been formed at the high school.

Penmanship, Raymond S. Dower
Your supervisor is very well pleased with the writing as he finds it in the first six grades. The credit for this goes to the individual class- room teachers.
We are concerned over the dropping of supervision in the junior high school. Unless the teachers insist on good writing it is inevitable that there will be deterioration, which will require that the senior high school teachers will have to devote more time to this subject.
It is difficult to contend with the new penmanship philosophy that position, movement and drill are no longer important, and that legibility is the only important thing.
Remedial Reading, Martha C. Dickinson
Since the inauguration of this program in September 1954 we have been able to help 135 children improve their reading. This program is set up in such a way that the teachers go to a different group of schools each six weeks, all ten elementary schools getting its benefits at some time during the years.
Each child is given a formal reading test before the remedial help, and another at the end of the remedial period. Thus we are able to measure the child's gains during the six week period.
Last Summer for the first time a Summer School was set up for those children needing extra help. There were three classes of sixteen pupils each. The results were gratifying.
Physical Education, Earle W. Crompton, Director
Adelaide B. Meikle, Supervisor, Elementary Physical Education
The physical fitness of the youth of Wakefield is of primary concern to the department of physical education.
All boys and girls are given units in the various games, exercises, gymnastics and tests from which stems good physical fitness.
The majority of our students cannot engage in a major sport, yet 90% of our outdoor facility is gauged for such a program. Carry-over values in sports are derived from tennis, hand ball, golf, badminton, volley ball, swimming, archery, squash and the like.
Athletically we are dangerously crowded. The baseball field over- laps the track. There is constant danger that baseballs, arrows, jave- lins, etc. may be flying from the areas in which boys are practising into areas where girls are engaged in their activities.
Mrs. Meikle is only able to visit each classroom once every two weeks. However, she leaves mimeographed material so that the classroom teacher may carry on the work planned by the supervisor.
The program includes outdoor games, stunts and tumbling, singing games, folk dances, square dances.
Health, Dr. Sigmund J. Szydłowski
The school health program was changed somewhat this year due to the opening of the Atwell Junior High School. Mrs. Adams was as- signed to the Junior and Senior High Schools, and Mrs. O'Brien to grades one through six in the elementary schools, thus giving Mrs. O'Brien more time for follow-up work and for home visits.

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
A total of 1,590 children were given full medical examinations at the various schools. There were 56 mothers present at the examina- tions of the first and fourth grade pupils. A total of 338 children had their examinations done by their family physicians.
The following defects were noted-
367 needed dental care
103 throat conditions
18 had hard wax in ear canals
17 had enlarged neck glands
8 speech defects noted
14 had flat feet
16 posture defects noted
3 heart conditions noted
19 genital defects noted
12 had high blood pressure
181 nutritional problems noted
2 had diabetes
7 skin conditions noted
11 were not vaccinated successfully
All school children received a vision and hearing test and the fail- ures received notes to that effect after a re-check was done individually. Two hundred and eleven failed the vision test and 160 failed the hearing test.
There were 376 physicals done on boys before they participated in sports.
Mrs. O'Brien made 93 home visits during the year and gave first aid in 440 cases. Of these she took 106 to their homes, 10 to the family physician, and two to the hospital.
Mrs. Adams took care of 2,903 visits to the high school health room, and 457 visits to the junior high health room.
All student cafeteria workers were given complete physical exam- inations and were taken for chest x-rays to the sanitorium.

Dear Wakefield High, we honor you With voices strong and free. To us you've given happiness, A glimpse of what's to be.

TOWN OF WAKEFIELD
"Within ourselves our future lies." This thought will lead us on To our set goals in years to come When dreams are almost gone.
As graduates of Fifty-five We face a future bright. May your wise teachings be our guide And everlasting light. Chorus Our love is yours, dear Wakefield High, Your story's in each heart. We pledge to you our loyalty This night as we depart.
Words by Joan Frances McMahon Music by Charlotte Anne LeBlanc and Howard Ainsley Walen
Class Colors Blue and Silver
