No-School Policy


The Hancock School will be in session each school day in conformity with the school calendar. Whenever storm conditions of unusual severity arise, or for other good reason, the chairman of the Hancock School Committee will cause the No-School announcement for Hancock pupils and teachers to be broadcast over radio station WTRY at Troy before 7:30 A. M.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS


To the School Committee of the Town of Hancock:


Gentlemen:


I herewith submit my fourteenth annual report as Superintendent of Schools for the Town of Hancock, Massachusetts.


Acceptance of the New Hancock School


The new Hancock School, which was opened to pupils on April 14, 1958, was officially turned over to the Hancock School Committee by the Hancock School Building Committee at 9:20 P. M., Monday, January 19, 1959. The School Com- mittee and superintendent of schools accepted the new school on behalf of the townspeople and generously thanked the members of the Building Committee for their splendid efforts. The full membership of the Hancock School Building Committee, consisting of Chairman Leon H. Roberts, Jr., Secretary Gerald S. Spaniol, John C. Smith, Jr., Eugene L. Whitman, and Perry G. Whitman, was present while the Hancock School Committee was represented by Chairman Dorothy I. Leab and Eugene L. Whitman with Dr. Joseph A. Wilk, superintendent of schools, serving as coordinator of the school building transference procedure from Building Committee to School Committee.


Personnel


There were no changes in school personnel of the Hancock School system during 1959 nor any changes of assignment.


Gift to the Hancock School


Mr. and Mrs. C. Wells Conklin presented the Hancock School with a Loud Speaking System, fully installed, at the Hancock School graduation exercises held on June 4, 1959. Mrs. Conklin, teacher of the intermediate grades at the Hancock School, and her husband, a local assessor, received resounding applause from the audience for their civic-minded contribution to the school and the community.

School Census


The school census figures for 1959 indicate that there were 148 children in the Town of Hancock on October 1, 1959, an increase of 4 as compared with the figure of 144 children in 1958. These census figures include all children of pre- school age as well as those of pupils in the Hancock School or as public or private tuition pupils in the New Lebanon, Pittsfield, and Williamstown schools. A de- tailed tabulation breakdown of the 148 Hancock children is indicated in the fol- lowing table:
