The lunch room is crowded each of the two lunch periods. Some pupils are unable to sit at a table, but bal- ance a tray on their knees. We do not have room for any more tables of the style now in use, but we could use addi- tional stools and some narrow tables.
It is a pleasure to acknowledge the thoughtful con- sideration of high school problems by the school committee and the friendly counsel and the professional leadership of the superintendent of schools.
Respectfully submitted,
CHESTER M. DOWNING,
Principal.
Report of School Nurse
To the Superintendent of Schools:
School health work each year has some change. Our present health ideals have to do with mental, emotional and social soundness as well as physical fitness. We endeavor to protect the child's health through cooperation of the parent, teacher, dentist, nurse, health specialist, and through the child himself.
The nurse plans to spend one day each week at the High School and to visit the elementary schools at least once every week. She is on call for any emergency. Pupils are urged to report to the teacher and then to the nurse for minor injuries, examination of skin conditions, sore throats, etc. This protects other pupils from exposure to contagion.
Other activities of the nurse include the investigation each year of physically handicapped children and the in- vestigation from time to time of children between the ages of 14 and 16 who have asked the Superintendent for per- mission to leave school.
The nurse assisted in arranging for the Thanksgiving baskets to which pupils and teachers contributed. The Fairhaven Benevolent Association gave $30.00 to help with the elementary school baskets, and the dairies and bakers of Fairhaven and New Bedford donated bread and milk. One hundred four baskets were given out this year, forty from the High School and sixty-four from the elementary schools.
The nurse has also assisted in the distribution of milk for which money has been contributed by the Mothers Club and by the Teachers Association.
The various clinics held each year are a great help in discovering defects of eyes, ears, and teeth, and in provid- ing immunization against diphtheria. Clinics have given X-ray examinations for the discovery of tuberculosis, mental examinations for retarded children, and hearing tests with the use of an audiometer.
