Report of Selectmen

For the Fiscal Year ending December 31, 1914.

The financial accounts of the various departments of the town for the fiscal year ending December 31, 1914, appear in detail in their several reports.

The Board of Selectmen recommend that this year $34,000.00 be appropriated for the highways, an increase of $4,000.00 over the amount appropriated in 1914.

There are in this town over 100 miles of streets, and with the constantly increasing automobile travel, the cost of main- tenance becomes greater each year. Good roads are essen- tial to the growth and prosperity of a town, and are one of the strongest factors in the building up of a progressive municipality . Your Board of Selectmen are optimistic, and thoroughly believe Leominster will be at the front when the general prosperity, that is sure to come, becomes a reality, and recommend that all reasonable means be adopted which will advance the prosperity of the town, thereby promoting the general welfare of its citizens.

A problem that confronts the town at the present time is the disposal of its sewerage, now emptying into the Nashua river. The city of Fitchburg intends to complete its sewerage system during the present year, after which time none of its sewerage will empty into the river, and the town of Leom- inster will then probably be obliged to take action.

The present sewerage system is so constructed that prac- tically all of the sewerage is or can be conducted to the

"Divoll farm" on Mechanic street, said farm being owned by the town, and bought for the sewerage disposal.

It is the opinion of this board that during the present year investigations should be made and a report presented to the town as to different methods that are in operation else- where, and a system be recommended, together with the esti- mated cost of installing the same.

Your Selectmen have drawn fifty-two orders, amounting to $511,987.37, as follows :-
