REPORT OF THE TOWN AUDITORS

-

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen

Carver, Mass.

Gentlemen:

We submit herewith our report of an audit of the books and accounts of the Town of Carver for the period from Jan. 1st, 1960 to Dec. 31st, 1960. We wish to thank the Town Clerk's office for the fine Cooperation received in making this audit. We find the records and books neat, accurate, and in excellent order for which we express our appreciation.

We feel at this time that we should state that we are very much in favor of the bookkeeping system which was installed in 1958. The records are much easier to work with, and this saves a great deal of time. All records of transactions are much clearer and easier to audit. This with the accuracy of the way the books are kept makes it easier for all involved. We as auditors feel this was a very important step in improving our town records.

Respectfully submitted,

FRANCIS A. MERRITT

REPORT OF VETERANS' AGENT

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen

Carver, Mass.

Gentlemen:

I submit herewith for your consideration and approval the report of the Department of Veterans' Services for the year 1960.

It has been a privilege and a pleasure to work with the board and by having monthly meetings with you and any veteran who seek my services has kept me in constant contact with every situation.

I am able to turn back to your E & D. fund approximately $2,000.00 from our appropriation. This was due to the fact that Carver had very few illnesses or hospitalization of her veterans.

Expenditures in this department will increase as the war time veterans who are eligible for our benefits get older and need more care.

Due to the new amendments in the social security laws, we will be able to lighten our load as those who are now eligible for disability pensions have their claims processsed.

I intend to continue my monthly office hours at the Town Hall on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

GEORGE E. WHEELER, Veterans' Agent

REPORT OF THE HIGHWAY SURVEYOR

- -

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen

Carver, Mass.

Gentlemen:

The Chapter 81 allotment of $24,750.00, of which the town appropriated $6,600.00 and the State $18,150.00, must be used for maintenance purposes only. Out of this amount approxi- mately $13,462.00 was used to purchase and apply 40,982 gal- lons of asphalt for sealing the streets. The remainder of the account was used for patching, catch basins, culverts, shoulders and other miscellaneous maintenance operations.

The Chapter 90 allotment of $28,000.00 of which the town appropriated $7,000.00, the County $7,000.00 and the State $14,000.00 was used on two streets. Twenty thousand dollars was allotted for Main Street, Route 58, where 3550 feet of road was completely built to a width of 26 feet with proper drain- age, 9 inches of new gravel and approximately 1475 tons of Bituminous Concrete Type I surface applied.

The remaining $8,000.00 was spent on Tremont Street where 1400 feet of road built the previous year was topped with 3 inchs of Bituminous Road Mix Type C-1. An addition- al 1400 feet of the existing 18 foot road was widened to 26 feet with 9 inches of gravel foundation and a Bituminous Road Mix Type C-1 used on the widened area and existing road as a base and leveling course.

1960 REPORT OF LIBRARY TRUSTEES

-

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen

Carver, Mass.

Gentlemen:

Early this year the number of library hours was increased to nine, adding Wednesday evening, 6 to 9 p.m. to our weekly schedule. Books of special note are Collier's Encyclopedia in fifteen volumes, Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia, and Wilson's Standard Catalogue purchased from the Rosa A. Cole Fund, and Twentieth Century Authors, making a valuable addition to our permanent collection. A few more young patrons won their awards for State Certificate Reading. We are pleased to note a trend toward whole families visiting the library together.

During the year there have been several displays of art by school children, as well as a very fine fire prevention assembly and designs in pastels done by groups of Girl Scouts to earn merit badges.

Our sincere thanks are extended to the donors of books, magazines, flower arrangements and to all other friends of the library who have helped to make it a better place for study and enjoyment.
