Making 215 persons who received certificates, and who were probably all married : 16 persons more than during the year 1870.
The record of intentions of marriage shows the true number of persons who are married ; the law requiring a certificate from the city or town clerk where each party resides.
While it belongs to the city or town clerk to obtain answers to the legal questions upon the certificates, it be- longs to the parties who perform the marriages to know that two certificates are obtained by the parties to be mar- ried, if they reside in two different towns or cities in this Commonwealth.
MARRIAGES.
The whole number of marriages recorded in Newton for for 1871 is 130; 5 more than in 1870.
The greatest number of marriages in any one month was 25, in June ; the least number was 5, in March, and 5 in September.

According to the census taken in 1870, the population of Newton was 12,825. If sextons, and those who have buried friends without employing sextons, have faithfully returned all the deaths, the facts show but one death last year in 117 of our population, for the number of people must be now about 14,000.
We considered that the deaths last year were less pro- portionately than they had been for the previous twenty years. The year 1871 shows a much less ratio.
Seven of the deaths last year were not returned to me till after I had made my return to the Secretary of the Com- monwealth; but I have reckoned them in last year's ac- count.
The number of deaths in Newton the past year by con- sumption, compared with the whole number of deaths, was one in about nine and a half; the year previous, one in eight and seven-eighths, - being a further decrease of the comparative number of deaths by consumption.
Other Diseases.
69
84
This is certainly encouraging to the people of Newton, though that disease is still the leading one among the many that carry off our race, and perhaps always will be in New England.
In the years 1858 and 1859, about one in four of all the deaths in Newton were by consumption ; in 1860 and 1861, one in six and one-half ; in 1862 and 1863, about one in seven; in 1864 and 1865, one in six ; in 1866 and 1867, one in five and three-fourths; 1868 and 1869, one in eight and three-fourths ; and in 1870 and 1871, about one in nine and one-fourth. This last two years' ratio is not half so large as it was in 1858 and 1859.
It is believed that this favorable change has been caused by the blessing of Heaven upon our efforts to better pro- tect our feet from cold and wet.
This favorable result should encourage us all, not only to " trust in a kind Providence, but to keep our feet dry " and warm ; for this disease is still more to be dreaded than the cholera and small-pox together.

It appears, by the foregoing table, that, for ten years pre- vious to year before last, the number of deaths in Newton, on an average, had been one in seventy-four of the popula-
85
tion. In 1870, one in ninety-six and a half; and in 1871, one in one hundred and seventeen. The average mortality of our State has usually been about one in fifty-four. Truly we have reason to be thankful for our pleasant and healthy homes ; and we need not wonder that they are multiplying so rapidly in our villages. With two steam railroads run- ning through our town, and two more in prospect, what may we expect in the future ?
Notwithstanding Newton is one of the most healthy towns in our land, yet its inhabitants die ; and we must ex- pect a larger proportionate number this year than we had last year; and they will need a quiet, pleasant, resting- place from the cares and toils of life. Perhaps many parents who will be called this year to find that resting- place for some dear one have not yet selected the spot. Is it not wise to do this when all are in health, and not do as the writer did, - wait till he was compelled to seek one ? We invite such to visit our
NEWTON CEMETERY.
There are about seventy lots, of different sizes, now graded, and ready for use; and more will be prepared when the frost disappears. We think our Newton Cemetery, under the care of our excellent Superintendent and Assist- ant, is deservedly popular ; and we hope not many of the citizens of Newton will seek a resting-place for their fami- lies elsewhere, and pay twice the cost of one in our own town, with the disadvantage of having to go so much farther to visit it.
MARSHALL S. RICE, Registrar. NEWTON CENTRE, Feb. 12, 1872.
