REGISTRATION FOR MILITARY SELECTIVE SERVICE


Pursuant to a proclamation by the President of the United States on September 16, 1940, and a proclamation by Leverett Saltonstall, Gov- ernor of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, on September 25th, a Military Selective Service Registration was held on October 16th, 1940, at the Center School beginning at 7:00 a. m. and closing at 9:00 p. m. with the following result.


Total number of male citizens between the ages of 21 years to 35 years inclusive, registered 1077.


The registrations cards were placed in the vault and turned over to the clerk of the town, Norman P. Charles.


The cards were delivered to the Reading-Wakefield draft board on October 18, 1940.

The polls will be opened at 7 o'clock A. M. and will close at 8 o'clock P. M. And you are directed to serve this warrant by posting attested copies thereof in at least ten public places in the Town not less than seven days prior to November 5, 1940, and by causing an at- tested copy to be published in the Reading Chronicle one day, at least prior to said date. Hereof fail not and make due return of this warrant with your doings thereon before the time and place of said meeting.

In accordance with the provisions of Section 125, Chapter 54 of the General Laws of Massachusetts 1932, Ter. Ed., the City Clerk of Woburn and the Town Clerks of Reading, North Reading, and Wil- mington, being the City and Town Clerks of every city and town in Representative District number eighteen within said county, met at the City Hall, Woburn, at noon on Friday, November 15, 1940, being the 10th day succeeding the day of the State Election held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 1940, and then and there opened, examined and compared the copies of the records of votes cast at said election for the office of rep- resentative, and determined therefrom that Newell H. Morton of Read- ing and Herman P. Peterson of Woburn were elected to the office of Representative.

Whereas,-petitions have been filed with the State Secretary, in the interest of Paul A. Dever of Cambridge, Democratic candidate for the office of Governor, and Leverett Saltonstall of Newton, Republican candidate for the office of Governor, for state-wide recounts of bal- lots cast at the election held November 5, 1940, for the office of Gov- ernor under the provisions of General Laws, Chapter 54, Section 135, as amended: and


Whereas,-after the official tabulation of votes by the Governor and Council it appears that the difference in the number of votes cast for the two leading candidates for said office of Governor is less than one per cent of the total number of votes cast for such office ;


Therefor, under the provisions of said section 135, as amended, it becomes my duty to, and I do hereby order the clerk of each city or town of the Commonwealth to transmit forthwith, and said clerk shall so transmit the envelopes containing the ballots, sealed, to the Regis- trars of the city or town who shall without unnecessary delay, open the envelopes, recount the ballots cast for said office and determine the questions raised.
