During the year 1940, the Reading Police ambulance made the following trips :

Total trips made by Police Department Ambulance for Year 1940, 195.
Eighteen (18) of the above recorded trips were made to various hospitals as a result of automobile accidents. A total of fifty-one (51) persons were taken from the scene of accidents to doctors for medical treatment. We have had no fatal automobile accidents in Reading during the year 1940.
Mileage Totals
The Police Ambulance covered a total of 3,773 miles; the Packard has travelled 3,571 miles; Cruiser No. 1 has travelled 37,453; the old Cruiser No. 2, a Plymouth Tudor Sedan, travelled 8,955 miles from Janu- ary 1, 1940 to April 26, 1940, when it was replaced by a new Ford Tudor Sedan. From April 26, 1940 until December 31, 1940, this latter car travelled 22,649 miles, making a total of 76,401 miles travelled by the various automotive units of the Police Department for the year 1940.

Recommendations
I recommend the purchase of a new car to replace the 1939 Ply- mouth Tudor Sedan (Car No. 1) bought on October 4, 1939, which has travelled from the date of purchase, to January 13, 1941, inclusive, a total of 49,850 miles.
I also recommend an increase of the permanent force by the ap- pointment of two regular officers.
Conclusion
At this time I wish to thank the Honorable Board of Selectmen, the Judges of our District Court, the Clerks of our Court, our local Press, and all others who have assisted in promoting the welfare of this de- partment, also the members of this department for what they have don'e.

The building construction for the past year was as follows : 97 new one family dwellings at an estimated cost of $ 350,045.00 1 new two family dwelling at an estimated cost of 4,000.00
21 Alterations and additions to dwellings at an estimated cost of 15,175.00
20 new private garages at an estimated cost of
5,476.00
1 new service station
1 new lubritorium
1 new greenhouse
5 new henhouses
1 new boiler house
1 new tool house
1 new storage house
14 alterations and additions to various buildings.
Estimated cost of the above building construction 18,105.00
Total estimated cost of all building construction $392,801.00 Number of permits granted, 164.
Fees received for building permits, $564.50.
