40 REPORT OF THE LIBRARIAN


To the Honorable Board of Trustees:


I herewith submit my annual report as Librarian.


Public documents received, 12 volumes.


Number of new books purchased during the year, 162 volumes.


A valuable book on Elementary Economics written by F. A. Fairchild, E. S. Furniss and N. S. Buck, published in two volumes, has been presented by Norman S. Buck.


Three books have been presented by Mrs. Elizabeth C. Wood- man: Arctic Explorations: The Panama Canal and Battle Field and Prison Pen.


One book from Mrs. Mildred Neilson: The First State Normal School in America; also six books from other friends.


One book lost by a borrower for a time has been returned.


Number of books not returned by borrowers, 10 volumes.


Number of books lost to library on account of contagious dis- eases, 15 volumes.


Number of objectionable books taken out of library, 8 volumes.


Miss E. Louise Jones, Field Secretary of the State Division of Public Libraries, assisted by the Librarian, went through the library and took out books and pamphlets it was thought best not to keep longer; also discarded of the catalogued books those worn out and those considered of no value to the library, 1,080 volumes.


Of the catalogued books five have been replaced with books previously given by friends and some others will probably be re- placed later. Six have been placed with Town books.


Later the Vital Records, numbering 169 volumes, were taken from the library and sent to the State Library.


Number of books repaired by Miss Kingman, 376 volumes.


Number of books in library, 5,561 volumes.


Number of books taken out during the year, 11,180 volumes.


Number of persons taking out books, 693.


A change has been made in the way the books are catalogued: the Cutter System has been dropped and only the Dewey numbers used.

The genealogy of Henry Blanchard has been given by his daugh- ter, Miss Margaret Blanchard.


The reading table has been supplied from the Town `appropria- tion with the following magazines: "Radio News," "Popular Sci- ence," "Scientific American," "Popular Mechanics," "National Sportsman," "Outdoor America," "Nature Magazine," "National Geographic," "American," "Country Gentleman," "Flower Grower," "Ladies' Home Journal," "Youths' Companion," "St. Nicholas," "American Boy" and "Saturday Evening Post."


Some others contributed by friends are "Our Dumb Animals," "Dearborn Independent," "Bell Telephone Quarterly" and "Spe- cialty Salesman."


The Boy Scouts have given "Boy's Life," beginning with the February number until about January, 1930.


"The Christian Science Monitor" has been given for six months, the first copy received for August 23.
