On the application of Mr. Sancry for permission to place a fish box at the bottom of Rainsfords Lane-The Board agreed to grant his request, on condition that he should constantly keep · fresh fish for sale at that place. ordered, That Mr. Brown remove his fish box from the aforesaid place forthwith.

The accounts of Mr. Merriam, Clerk of the Market having been examined by the committee appointed for that purpose- report was made, that the expences of paving & flagging on the north side of Faneuil Hall-building new vegetable stalls, & fish boxes amounted to

Application having been made for liberty to open part of the common sewer in North street, the proprietors had been notified -a remonstrance was now presented from a great number of them-the same was referred to Messrs. Webb & Austin to visit the premises and enquire into the circumstances of the case, and to report at next meeting .-

part of the street had been incommoded with water in the cellars, which had now disappeared-The proprietors of those houses were present and stated that the length of 150 feet would relieve all the houses which had suffered from water in their cellars.
Voted, That Deacon Rainsford have liberty to proceed to repair or new lay the common sewer in North street, under the inspection of Mr. Webb & Mr. Austin, to commence at the capsill of the dock, & not to extend further than one hundred & fifty feet southerly .-

Return was made by Deacon Josiah C. Rainsford of the expence of repairing the common sewer in North street, the account whereof being duly examined by the Selectmen was by them allowed; they being informed at the same time that all persons concerned in said drain had been notified according to law & that no objection had been made-Assessment was now made, an order of payment was passed by the Selectmen as fol- lows viz. Whereas a drain or common sewer has been laid in North street conformably to the directions of the Selectmen, the whole expence whereof amounts to one hundred & fifty nine dol- lars & sixty cents, which expence is to be borne by such persons whose drains enter therein & receive benefit thereby-Wherefore, we the subscribers, Selectmen of said Town of Boston certify that having considered the same expence and by whom & in what manner it ought to be paid-Do Adjudge that the same be paid in the proportion following & by the persons hereafter named-viz.

Selectmen of Boston.
An Account was presented from Mr. Phillips, Hay weigher, of the proceeds of the hay scales one quarter, -the same was referred to Mr. Hunnewell to examine & report.
A communication was received from the Town Treasurer, stat- ing the amount of demands unpaid against the Town, & request- ing the advice & opinion of the board of the expediency of borrowing a sufficient sum to discharge the most urgent demands- The same having been considered,-Voted that the Treasurer be advised & empowered to borrow the sum of ten thousand dollars to discharge the most pressing demands upon the Town Treasury.
[205.] Deeds of the lands in Mill Pond were presented by the Clerk of that Corporation-they were read & referred to the Chairman & Mr. Foster for examination.
On a Representation being made to the Board that Mr. Robert Rand had become intemperate, & was in danger by wasting his property & idleness, of becoming chargeable to the Town, a certificate to that effect was addressed to the hon. Judge of Probate, requesting that a guardian might be appointed for him .-

It having been made to appear to the Selectmen that several persons have lately entered their drains into the Common Sewer in Jarvis' Row who have paid no part of the expence of building the same-It is hereby adjudged that they shall pay for that privi- lege as follows, to be divided among the original proprietors- according to the Vote of the Selectmen February 24th. 1806. viz. Mr. Wells appeared in behalf of the inhabitants of Back street. to request that measures might be taken for laying a common sewer in that street from Richmond street to Prince street .- It was agreed that the Chairman should notify each of the abutters, of the proposed undertaking ; that they might make objections if they should see fit so to do .-
Mr. George Jackson appeared on the complaint of Mr. Wheeler -the complainant not being present agreed to refer the subject to the next meeting. both parties to be notified to appear.

Mr. Hunnewell reported that he had examined the accounts of . Mr. Samuel Philips hay weigher & had found the balance due to the Town to be sixty five dollars & fourteen cents, which was ordered to be paid to the Treasurer.
A communication was received from the Board of Health rela- tive to nuisance in Tucker's pasture-but no order was taken thereon .-
A number of inhabitants of Back street appeared to object to new laying the common sewer in that street .-

The Chairman, Mr. Oliver & Mr. Weld, a committee to meet with committees from the Court of Sessions, the Overseers of the Poor, and others, to take into consideration the licentious conduct of the inhabitants & frequenters of the hill south of Cambridge street, and to advise upon and adopt measures to remedy this increasing nuisance .-

[211.] An application respecting a house in Olive street, represented hazardous-was committed to the Chairman to view and Report .-
Boston ss. At a Meeting of the Selectmen September 15th. 1813. Present the whole Board except Mr. Williams.
The Clerk of the Market produced his accounts for the quarter ending Augt. 1st. with vouchers for the same, and a receipt from the Treasurer for the balance of $200.91/100 the same were examined and approved.
Mr. Hunnewell was desired to have necessary repairs made to Lincoln street-on the request of the abutters.
The Chairman empowered to have some gravel spread at the head of Middlecot street, to repair the street & to help the ascent to Derne street.
[The] Military company of Ward 8 have liberty to use one of the armories to deposit their belts & knapsacks &c until it shall be wanted for an armory.
Complaint was received from Mr. Sanborn constable of the Center Watch-[212.] respecting some of his men; and also a memorial from the watchmen against Mr. Sanborn-Agreed that the parties be notified to appear on next Wednesday after- noon-for examination into the causes of complaint .-
Boston ss. At a Meeting of the Selectmen September 22ª 1813. Present Messrs. Bulfinch, Oliver, Hunnewell, Webb, Weld, & Austin.
Agreeably to assignment-the captain of the Center Watch & a number of the members of the same Watch were present and were examined, relative to complaints laid before the board by them .- after a full hearing they withdrew-and it was voted by the board, that three members of the watch, Davis, Holden, & Jenkins be dismissed ; and that the Chairman, Mr. Hunnewell & Mr. Weld be a committee to reprimand Captt. Sanborn for want of system and energy .-
Mr. Lovering was desired to procure a sufficient quantity of gun powder to complete what is required by law .-
Certificate was signed, approving of the building in Federal street, to be used as a Theatre for the ensuing season, & also of Messrs. [213.] Powell & Dickson & their associates as per- formers the same time .-

Agreeably to a precept from [the] hon. Judge of Probate for County of Suffolk, inquisition was made into the circumstances of Mrs. Leeds, widow, and return was signed, to the Judge of Probate, that she was a person, non compos mentis, and recommending that a guardian should be appointed for her.

Mr. Austin & Mr. Webb were desired to have the engine house in Back street enlarged and a chimney built-provided the rent of the land shall not exceed twenty dollars after the building shall be enlarged.

Petition was received from a number of the Methodist Society, complaining of the conduct of unruly lads on the evenings of their lectures .- The Chairman was desired to inform the petition- ers, that if they would appoint proper persons to notice & com- plain of the offenders, the officers of the Police would prosecute them for their misconduct .-

Boston ss. At a Meeting of the Selectmen November 3d. 1813. Present Messrs. Bulfinch, Hunnewell, Foster, Webb, Weld, Lovering, Austin & Williams.
Jurors were drawn for the Supreme Judicial Court.
The Chairman reported that he had examined the accounts of Mr. Phillips hay weigher to October 1st. that the balance due to the town was eighty eight dollars, six cents-an order was passed that the Treasurer should demand & receive the same.
[216.] Mr. Philip Burrill, constable of one division of the north watch having lately deceased, several applications were received from persons wishing to supply the vacancy : which were read, & Mr. Ezra Chamberlin was approved & chosen as consta- ble of the watch.
An application was received from the inhabitants of Charles street requesting that that street should be furnished with lamps & lighted. Voted. That the Chairman give directions for placing as many lamps as may be necessary, it being the opinion of the Board that eight would be sufficient.
It was agreed that Mr. William Wright should have the care & superintendence of the lamps the present season & Mess's. Hunnewell, Foster & Lovering a committee to consider what improvements could be made either in arrangement of lighters & economy of purchases & repairs.
Voted. That the Treasurer be requested to pay to Mrs. Burrill the amount of wages due for her late husbands services as con- stable of the watch .-

SELECTMEN'S MINUTES, 1813.
The deputy collectors appointed by the Town Treasurer to col- lect the back taxes-made application to the board that the rate of compensation for that service should be agreed upon previous to their commencing the business.
The Chairman, Mr. Hunnewell and Mr. Foster to confer with the Treasurer & to report on this subject .-
The committee to regulate the lighting of lamps the present season, reported their, arrangements & proposed that the oil lately received should be guaged, that the real quantity might be known .- The Chairman was desired to direct Mr. Wright to employ Mr. Samuel Wheelwright for that purpose, & inform Mr. Bradlee that he might be present at the time.
