The objects of the Association are:


First. The advancement of the Directory business and the improve- ment of Directories by the interchange of ideas and the exchange of ex- perienced employes.


Second. To provide protection to the public against fraudulent ad- vertising schemes which operate under the name of Directories, and to drive unprincipled promoters of the same out of business.


Third. To provide permanent and profitable employment to compe- tent, industrious and honest Directory canvassers and compilers.


Fourth. For the mutual protection and advancement of the estab- lished and prospective interests of all who may become members, by personal advice and assistance of members as may be mutually satis- factory, desirable or advisable, and by such other means as may, from time to time, be shown to be wise, proper and lawful.

The 1920 edition of the Baltimore City Directory is herewith presented.


The several essential departments of the work are compiled in the order fol -- lowing :


The MISCELLANEOUS DEPARTMENT, covering pages 21 to 51, embraces data concerning the city executive, health, police, fire, educational, parks, water works and other departments, Federal and State officials, churches, schools (public and private), the postoffice, courts, consulates, clubs, hospitals, associa- tions, fraternal and benevolent organizations, etc.


The STREET AND AVENUE GUIDE is contained in pages 57 to 90.


The BUYERS' GUIDE. This is a new feature in this Directory and occupies , pages 107 to 329, printed on tinted paper. In the Guide will be found classified according to lines of business and the professions attractive display advertisements and business cards of those engaged in the various industries and professions. If those making use of the information contained in the Buyers' Guide would only state the source of their information every business man in the city would soon come to a realization of the importance of his business or that of his firm or com- pany not only having proper representation in the Buyers' Guide, but also of being properly registered under all headings covering his lines of business in the Classi- fied Business Directory. "The Directory is the Common Intermediary between Buyer and Seller."


The ALPHABETICAL LIST OF NAMES of citizens, firms, corporations, institutions, and full information respecting them, is included in pages 333 to 2158. Information concerning names and changes of addresses received too late for proper arrangement are printed on page 19.


The CLASSIFIED BUSINESS DIRECTORY, occupies pages 2159 to 2469 and exhibits the various manufacturing, mercantile and professional names compiled under headings appropriate to the class of industry or profession followed.

BALTIMORE


A LEADING MANUFACTURING, JOBBING AND RETAIL CENTER.


Baltimore possesses advantages not surpassed by any city in the country. As a residence city it is more than ordinarily attractive. Its climate approaches that of Southern California. Its proximity to the markets of the Middle West and South, with exceptionally low freight rates, put it in a position to defy competition. As a place for a varied line of factories it is utterly without a rival. It has abundant labor, with strike tendencies at a minimum. It has nearby sources of fuel and raw material. It has a perfect harbor, with deep water, fine channel and modern terminals. It has a combination of railroad systems, with freight rates, West and South, lower than any other Atlantic seaport. It is closer to the east and west coast of South America and the Panama Canal than any Atlantic or Pacific sea- coast city. And, finally, in the matter of its physical construction, it has lovely homes, beautiful parks, fine paved streets, splendid churches, handsome educational institutions, world-famous hospitals and a high standard of culture, decency and morality.


Since the disastrous fire of 1904· over $200,000,000 have been expended in con- struction of handsome commercial blocks and "skyscrapers." Baltimore is a credit to her people and a credit to the American nation. Its many miles of smooth streets, its fine filtered water, its model sewer system, its excellent fire department, its modern public schools, its high general average of municipal cleanliness - all tend to make it a city of pronounced desirability.

The street car system of Baltimore is probably unsurpassed in America. Its finely equipped cars and a service which railroad men admit to be without a peer will afford accommodations for thousands to enjoy trolley rides along the historic Chesapeake Bay and into the picturesque suburbs.


BANKS AND TRUST COMPANIES.


Baltimore has 78 banks and trust companies. The financial leaders have caught the step of the twentieth century progress and are ready to do their part in pro- moting the future development of industrial Baltimore. The city has the best and biggest bonding companies in the world.


MANUFACTURING.


The trend of buyers towards Baltimore has been accentuated by the rapid mul- tiplication of factories during the last few years. Millions of outside capital have been added to the local money in the development of a wide diversity of manu- factured articles. When it is recalled there are over 150,000 laborers engaged in manufacturing activities with an output approaching the billion dollar mark, it can be seen that Baltimore is an important buying center to those who would buy direct from factories. Big industrial interests from the North and the West are estab- lishing factories in Baltimore at such arapid pace that it is occasioning alarm among Baltimore's competitors. Manufacturers realize that Baltimore's strategical position for railroad distribution; her nearness to raw material centers; her easy access to the sources of fuel, and her wonderful facilities for overseas trade, give her an' industrial advantage which no American city can surpass.


JOBBING.


Baltimore has long been recognized as one of the biggest and most satisfactory wholesale and jobbing markets in the country. Its jobbing houses are of a mis- cellaneous type, and the method of doing business in Baltimore has always assured to buyers a maximum of results for a minimum of cost. Under the guidance of the Merchants and Manufacturers' Association, which has a practice of paying the trav- eling costs to merchants who buy a stipulated total of goods in this city, a vast jobbing trade has been developed and is on the constant and encouraging increase. Baltimore's jobbing houses are classed as among the best and most reliable in the United States.


RETAILING.


The retail trade in Baltimore is in especially healthy condition. There is a spirit of co-operation among merchants, inspired and led by the Retail Bureau of the Merchants and Manufacturers' Association. The city has a large number of big department stores and an exceptionally fine list of "specialty" shops from which purchasers can satisfy their wants at prices which compare more than favorably with the average price level of other cities. Baltimore is the magnet for a large number of "shoppers" from Washington, lower Pennsylvania, Delaware, West Vir- ginia, Virginia and the Carolinaos. A fine variety of wares, plus the ability to make quick and dependable deliveries, make the city a very desirable market.


EXPORT GRAIN TRADE OF THE PORT OF BALTIMORE IS HOLDING ITS OWN.


The export trade in grain passing through the port of Baltimore is keeping well up with the shipments of last year. While the business has fallen off largely compared with that of 1915 and the peak year of 1916, it is still better than that of New York or Philadelphia.


BALTIMORE'S SPLENDID HARBOR.


Baltimore may well boast of her beautiful harbor whose salient features are unsurpassed. The channel leading from Baltimore is 35 feet deep and 600 feet wide. Baltimore is on the Patapsco River, a tributary of Chesapeake Bay, and is about 150 nautical miles from'the Capes, where Chesapeake Bay enters the Atlantic Ocean, and is 14 miles from the mouth of the Patapsco River. The mean average tide is but 12 inches. There are six miles of municipal wharfage front, 32 miles of

private wharfage, 10 miles of which are occupied by railroad piers and docks ; there are 1.4 miles of oceanic steamship docks; there are two miles of fine terminals con- trolled by wharf and dock companies; industrial concerns occupy 19 miles of water front. There are many miles of additional water front available at reasonable prices. There are at least 10 feet of water in the immediate environs of Baltimore Harbor. A uniform depth of 35 feet is maintained up to the piers provided for transatlantic steamships. The harbor affords every facility for anchorage and dockage, of load- ing and unloading, to all manner of craft.


CHESAPEAKE BAY TRADE.


There are various lines of modern steamboat service plying between Baltimore and the numerous ports and private wharves on the Chesapeake Bay and its tribu- taries, as well as between Baltimore and Washington, Norfolk, Richmond' and Philadelphia.


Over four thousand officially documented vessels are engaged in the Bay traffic, and practically all of them trade at Baltimore.


TRANS-ATLANTIC AND COASTWISE STEAMSHIPS.


There are nineteen steamship lines here regularly engaged in trans-Atlantic and other foreign trade, while many tramp steamers and sailing vessels make Baltimore a rendezvous.


Local companies operate steamers in the Chesapeake Bay and coastwise trade. Hundreds of sailing and motor vessels are owned and operated in the vicinity of this Port.


INDUSTRIAL BUILDINGS


Baltimore has a series of splendid "Industrial" or "Beehive" buildings where heat, light, power and space in proportion to the large or small needs of any and all kinds of industries can be had on terms and conditions attractive even to the infant enterprises.


RAILROAD TRANSPORTATION


Baltimore is the home of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Its administrative offices are here. Its tracks practically engirdle the city. Its freight facilities are- second to none in the country, and it reaches out with connections in every pos- sible direction.


Two of the most important divisions of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company converge in Baltimore and make it easy to ship to any possible point covered by the entire Pennsylvania system. The company maintains division offices and exten- sive terminals in Baltimore. Its numerous export and domestic elevators, storage- warehouses and terminals are of the usual excellent type. A number of modern piers afford every facility for the transhipment of the company's traffic, North, East, South and West.


Baltimore is the main terminus of the Western Maryland Railroad, which is: closely affiliated with the great New York Central system.


The Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad has 78 miles of trackage through the very rich farming country of Baltimore and Harford counties in Maryland, and York county in Pennsylvania.


GRAIN ELEVATOR CAPACITY.


The splendid outlook for this city in the matter of a very large increase in the volume of trans-Atlantic and South American shipping, mean that many addi- tional millions of bushels of grain are certain to come here from the West and Canada for purposes of export. Hence the coming demand for greater elevator service. The total grain storage capacity of the Baltimore elevators of the three- railroad systems operating here is 8,600,000 bushels.


DRY DOCKS AND MARINE RAILWAYS


A floating dock, twelve marine railways and three drydocks, the largest of which is 628 feet long and 125 feet wide, are located at this Port.

BALTIMORE produced "The Star-Spangled Banner," our national anthem. Fran- cis Scott Key caught the inspiration while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry. September 14, 1814. The first copy of the song was printed in Bal- timore and the first musical rendition of the song was in a Baltimore theatre. BALTIMORE is the first city in which a national convention was held for the nomination of a President and Vice-President. This was in 1831. The fol- lowing are the successful candidates for the Presidency who have secured their nomination in Baltimore: Jackson, Van Buren, Polk, Taylor, Pierce, Lincoln and Wilson.
