RTHUR PUE GORMAN, JR., lawyer, was born in Howard County, Maryland, March 27, 1873. He is a son of the late United States Senator Arthur P. Gorman, of Maryland, whose notable achievements and distinguished service as a statesman are known to every Marylander. His mother, the late Mrs. Hannah Donagan Gorman, was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1835, and was the daughter of a leading physician of that town.


«Mr. Gorman attended private schools in Washington, the Episco- pal High School in Virginia and at Lawrenceville, N. J. He received his legal education at Columbia University, University of Maryland and in the office of the late Attorney-General John P. Poe. After hav- ing been admitted to the Maryland Bar he formed a law partnership with Mr. Alonzo L. Miles under the name of Miles & Gorman, which was later dissolved in 1905.


He has been prominent in Democratic politics of his State. In 1904 he was elected from Howard County by the Democratic party to the State Senate of Maryland for a term of two years, and in 1908 was re- elected for a further term of two years. In 1911 he was the Democratic party's candidate for Governor of Maryland.


By Governor John Walter Smith he was appointed Colonel on the Military Staff of that Executive, and from the late Governor Austin L. Crothers received the commission of Brigadier-General on his Military Staff.


He is a member of the Maryland and Merchants' Clubs, and a meni- ber of the Maryland State Bar Association. He is at present engaged in the practice of law in Baltimore.

RALEIGH, MAJ. W. H. H., Baltimore, Md .: the only son of Hooper and Eliza Raleigh of Dorchester, Md. As a boy went West: attended preparatory school; entered the N. W. Univ .; grad. with degree of Ph.B. Returning home, began the study of law, but immediately took sides with the South; ran the blockade from Balto, City with several Marylanders and others: Was present in Richmond at the inaugural of Pres. Davis, C. S. A .; entered service immediately with a Va. artillery command, and served through the war in Carter's Battalion of Artillery under Stonewall Jackson. afterwards Gen. Ewell and then Gen. Gordon, being among the 7.500 who capitulated under Gen. Lee at Appomattox; participated in all the principal battles from the First Seven Days fights around Richmond to Appomattox, being severely wounded in the former, After the war was credit man for Hodges Bros., Balto., for 12 years, being the first to establish such a position outside of a firm: afterwards established a law and collection bureau, which continued with great success for 20 years, until the Balto. fire of 1904: engaged in various business enterprises, and was prominent in several noted reforms as bearing npon the needs of business requirements: never sought political preferment, and declined numbers of positions of honor and trust. owing to his large established law and collection business.
