KENNEDY, JOSEPH P., president of the P. Kennedy Foundry Company and the Malleable Iron & Steel Casting Company, Baltimore: was born in Philadelphia, June 2, 1887, the son of Patrick and Mary (Flynn) Kennedy. GUNTHER, GEORGE, brewer, was born at Wirtheim, Germany, March 29, 1846. He died in Balti- more, Md., September, 1912. Hle came to this country in 1866 a poor boy, and at his death left behind him a large fortune to his heirs and a wide reputation as a public-spirited and honored citizen. He began his career in New York as au employe in a brewery, where he remained for 3 years. In 1869 he became brewmaster for the Kress Brewery Co. of New York. In 1870 he came to Baltimore as brewmaster for George Rust. After a year he bought ont Christian Gall and started in the brewery business for himself. The little plant which he finished constructing at O'Donnell and 3d streets grew into one of the largest establishments of its kind. He also invested heavily in Baltimore City and Maryland State stocks and bonds, also country realty. Ils home in East Baltimore was one of the handsomest in the city.

THE AMERICAN BUILDING is one of Baltimore's most imposing skyscrapers. As the home of the oldest newspaper in America it contains one of the best equipped newspaper plants in the whole country, installed and constantly improved in a persistent endeavor to give The American's readers the very best service obtain- able. The building stands a substantial proof of The American's faith in Baltimore. It was the first large structure crected after the fire, and the lofty building that rose upon the ashes of the smaller one was an inspiration to Baitimore. We Build is the motto of The American, and it has done full measure of service in promoting the interests of the city and state. The American building represents an investment of over a million dollars, aside from the equipment. It is 16 stories high, honses five sextuple presses with a capacity of 225,000 papers an honr, and 25 linotype machines, in addition to all the necessary machinery which goes to make up a first-class newspaper office. The exterior is imposing. the interior artistic in decoration, and the building and plant as a whole testimony to The American's firm faith in the future of the Greater Baltimore.

EW men have proved themselves more capable of real success in any branch of business activity than Jere Hungerford Wheelwright, president of the Consolidation Coal Company and other large commercial organizations. That he started in life as a lawyer, which profession he forsook for business, has no doubt been contributory to his present high standing as the head of numerous great corporations. The descendant of good pioneer American stock, Mr. Wheelwright was born at Exeter, Westmoreland County, Virginia, May 15, 1868, the son of Dr. Frederick Dodge Wheelwright, a noted army surgeon, and Eleanor Ann Hungerford. His early education was obtained at various private schools and George Washington University (then Columbian University) from which he was graduated in law, class of 1890. He started his legal practice in Seattle, Washington, but re- turned East in 1893 and associated himself in the coal business with the late Senator Johnson N. Camden of West Virginia.
In 1898 he organized the Highland Coal & Coke Company. In 1901, with Senator Watson, he formed the Fairmont Coal Company of West Virginia. In 1903, by various combinations the Consolidation Coal Company was organized, with Senator Watson, president, and Mr. Wheelwright, vice-president. In 1911, on the former's retirement, Mr. Wheelwright was elected president.
Other organizations of which he is the controlling officer are the Somerset Coal Company, Pittsburgh & Fairmont Fuel Company, Clarksburg Fuel Company, Cumberland & Pennsylvania Railroad Com- pany and the Sandy Valley & Elkhorn Railroad Company.
He is a director of numerous important corporations.
