SOMERSET COUNTY.

SOMERSET Is the southernmost Bay county of the Eastern Shore. It is bounded north by Wicomico County, east by Worcester, south by Pocomoke River and Sound, and west by Chesapeake Bay. The Pocomoke River, which forms the south-eastern boundary, is navigable into Worcester County. Other navigable waters are the Manokin and the Annemessex, and Little Annemessex rivers, and Wicomico and Monie Creeks. All these waters run a good distance into the county, giving water communication to nearly all portions. The county includes the large islands, South Marsh and Smith's, lying between the Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound. The surface is level generally, though sufficiently undulating to give a considerable number of mill seats, improved mostly by grist and saw mills for local uses.

The soil in the northern part is a sand and clay mixed, and the lower section is mostly a strong clay soil well adapted to the growth of grain. The productions of the county are principally corn, wheat, oats and potatoes, with some market vegetables and fruits. Sweet potatoes are cultivated very largely, and yield extraordinary crops. The soil of Somerset is particularly adapted to the growth of market truck, and with its mild climate, caused by proximity to the bay and ocean, no county can excel it in the production of early or tender plants. The greatest mine of wealth of Somerset County is in ita inexhaustible oyster beds, which are unexcelled in their quality by any country known. These include the greater part of the Tangier Sound,

which produces the famous Tangier oysters. The oyster trade employs a very large portion of the population on the islands and shores of the Sound and rivers. Fish and wild fowl are also abundant.

The Eastern Shore Railroad, Dr. Geo. R. Dennis, President, extending from Crisfield to Delmar, Delaware, affords ample accommodations for freight and travel to most all parts of the county. The Worcester & Somer- set Railroad runs from Newtown and connects with the Eastern Shore Road a few miles North of Crisfield. These, with lines of steamers and sailing vessels, to different parts of the county, give unusual means of transporta- tion, and place all sections in easy reach of the markets of Baltimore, Phila- delphia and New York.

MARYLAND DIRECTORY.

TALBOT COUNTY.

TALBOT COUNTY occupies a central position among the Eastern Shore counties, being immediately on the bay shore, and bounded southerly and south-easterly by the Choptank River and Tuckahoe Creek, the former separating it from Dorchester and the latter from Caroline County. It is bounded on the north by Queen Anne's, which is partly separated from it by Wye River.

Seven-eightha of the outline of Talbot ia bounded by navigable waters, and it has also running inland Third Haven, Harria and Broad creeks, and St. Michael's and Miles' rivers, dividing it into peninsulas or necks, and several considerable islands, so that three-fourtha of the farms have navi- gable water at their very doors, and of the balance the farthest is not five miles from a landing.
